Title: Exploration of Water Treatment (Aluminium Contaminated Water) And Anti-Oxidant properties of Lagerstroemia speciosa (Queen’s Flower)

2 of 6

Introduction

  • East Coast Bauxite originated from southern and western parts of Odisha, i.e., Koraput, Rayagada, and Bolangir districts, and more than 95% of Bauxite is excavated from these sites. Bauxite is the most abundant ore of Aluminum.
  • Aluminum poisoning through drinking and household water has diverse and multidimensional effects on human health, it can result in liver stenosis, nephrotic syndrome, disruption of enzyme activities, and many more. Additionally, Aluminum repercussions toxicity to the central nervous system and causes dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Active ingredient in Lagerstroemia speciosa is corosolic acid, which is a pentacyclic triterpene acid and has 2 alpha hydroxy groups with high nonpolar nature and consequently less water soluble.
  • These hydroxy groups have a potential chelating tendency towards Al3+ due to stable five membered ring formation with chelation. The chemistry behind effective chelation lies in the HSAB (Hard Soft Acid Base) principle. Thus, Lagerstroemia speciosa, commonly known as queens flower, could be a productive choice for this purpose.

Benefits of Lagerstroemia speciosa

  • leaves are purgative, roots are astringent, stimulant and febrifuge (fever removing). Decoction of leaves is used in diabetes. In Manipur, its fruit is used locally applied for apathy of the mouth.
  • Corosolic acid lowers blood sugar levels by increasing insulin sensitivity, enhancing glucose uptake, and inhibiting alpha-glucosidase — an enzyme that helps digest carbs. That’s why it’s claimed to have an insulin-like effect.
  • In addition to their anti-diabetic properties, leaves offer health benefits, such as antioxidant, cholesterol-lowering, and anti-obesity effects.

** So, we can assume that after filtration of chelating complex , if corosolic acid remains in the purified water that will not harmful, rather we will be medically benefited because of its inherent properties.
