My Topic
What community did you focus on for your Community Project?
We wanted to focus on helping the Sixth Grade Students at SSIMS.
What need/issue did you focus on for your community?
We focused on helping six graders with their work because we knew that it has been a hard time for everyone and since middle school is new to them, we wanted to help them have an easier year.
Guiding Question
Criterion A (i): define a highly challenging goal to address a need within a community, based on personal interests
Guiding Question:
How can I create a positive change for 6th graders by helping them improve their math skills, and create a friendly environment?
Our project connects to the Global Context Identities & Relationships because we were trying to communicate with the 6th graders through a screen (which is already hard by itself) and create relationships and friendly environments for them.

Questions for students who were in a group
We stayed in touch by making a group chats and texting each other about the project. We occasionally did zooms together to prepare for the tutoring and review our teaching methods.
Any time our group had a obstacle we would make our own zoom meeting and talk about how we can resolve a problem.
We met up with our coach on assigned days but since we were tutoring her students we were able to get more opportunities to communicate with her out of session.
We did not use any organizations from outside of MCPS, all are our project was done in My MCPS with students.
Taking Action!
criterion C (i) demonstrate service as action as a result of the project
Thinking Skills
Criterion C (ii) demonstrate thinking skills
criterion D (i) evaluate the quality of the service as action against the proposal
Questions to Answer
Sometimes we were not all on the same page, weather it was about the process journal or about what time we should be tutoring. We had to make zooms/talk to each other so we can evaluate where we are.
I believe we did complete majority of the things we planned, we were able to tutor the kids and helped them work through difficulties. I do feel like we did answer our gilding question to some content, but honestly I feel like there's more we could have accomplished.
Reflection
Criterion D (ii): reflect on how completing the project has extended their knowledge and understanding of service learning
Questions to Answer
B.D I learn that the 6th graders had the same difficulties as i had in six grade and i gave them advice which made it easier to teach and easier for them to learn.
F.D I learned that 6th graders learn differently and respond to different situations.
M.F It’s important to help your community because it can give you a sense of accomplishment, that you did something for the greater good. It as well impacts the people around ultimately making a happier environment.
B.D Community service is important because you can help others and do something to benefit your community.
F.D Community service is important because it builds partnership and understanding.
M.F Although I feel like their more we could have did, I would not say we failed this project. I do feel like we tried our best to communicate with out students and I do feel some type of joy for what we did.
B.D. I think the project was successful because our main goal was to help 6th grade students in math and we accomplished that so i think the project was successful.
F.D I feel like it was somewhat successful because we got through some students and were able to help them.
Approaches to Learning Skills Reflection
Criterion D (iii): reflect on their development of ATL skills
Questions to Answer
While completing the community project there was many times we had to set reminders or do research, so I think we gained a few more skills to manage ourselves.
Completing the community project has helped me have patience when talking to others. By using different techniques with other students to get their attention to be focused in the classroom and to also change their perspective in math class.
3. How has completing the Community Project helped you develop your Communication and Social skills?
During our project we had to think of many ways to communicate to grab the attention of the 6th graders. We feel like we were able to get better social skills and will be able to teach more types of people in the future.
4. How has completing the Community Project helped you develop your Reflection skills?
Since we were reflecting ourselves after every tutoring session, we were able to get tons of practice reflecting. Practice makes perfect!
