Significance of AAPI Music in Pop Culture:

Diversify peoples’ music taste while developing an interest in new cultures.

Music is a way to connect with different people from different backgrounds.

The rising popularity of AAPI music like K-pop and J-pop, brings awareness to more genres from different cultures.

Some genres of music are more popular than others, but people have the potential to boost their popularity by supporting artists from different cultures.

I’m a casual watcher that wants to keep up with the trends (shounen)

Attack On Titan, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia

PROS:

Safe, good sets and interesting premises

stunning fights scenes, gorgeous animation

Lots of people watch these shows so you’ll be able to hold conversations.

CONS:

Casts of characters are relatively same-y

When these shows try to take itself seriously, it ends up being silly

If you’ve watched one of these shows, you’ve pretty much watched them all

35 of 51

I need to fill the empty void in my heart (romance)

Bunny Girl, Your Name, Fruits Basket, Oregairu

PROS:

Easy to follow, easy to root for romances

It is very clear who the main couple is going to be so you don’t need to waste your time

Satisfying journey

CONS:

Melodrama is a bit much sometimes

Story gets a little less interesting once the main couple gets together

Might be getting too old to appreciate High School romances these days (maybe that’s just a me problem tho)

36 of 51

I cry to make me feel alive (drama)

I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, Welcome to the N.H.K. Violet Evergarden

PROS:

Very emotional, but also very realistic

Characters actually act like human beings, I would say you are guaranteed to at least feel some sort of way

CONS:

These shows are pretty heavy.

37 of 51

Hipster shows that you’ve probably never heard about (???)

Summer Wars, Haruhi Suzumiya, Sakurada Reset

PROS:

Experimental, the episodes very in quality. Some hit, some don’t, and

it’s very noticeable.

Underrated anime to spice up your watch list!

Not the most popular shows to watch, but I think that they’re worth your time

CONS:

It’s hard to talk about these shows with other people because most of the time, you’re probably the only one who's watched them (lol)

38 of 51

Gold Standard (adventure)

Neon Genesis Evangelion, Shin Sekai Yori, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Baccano!

PROS:

Very introspective, philosophical, genre-defying and genre deconstructions

If you like shows that go above and beyond to tell a legitimate story, I’d point

to these first.

CONS:

Very slow burn so try to stick it out during those first few episodes (even the

beginning episodes are important later on, so the payoff is worth it)

Pretty complicated to follow
