Activity One: 25 marks

Create an A5 or A4 composition using some stones in a landscape. Aim at creating a mysterious mood using PAINTS in any combination. You may base your composition on the pictures of the famous Callanish stones below. (3000 BC)A cross-shaped setting of standing stones erected around 3000 BC.

This is flexible BUT do not get too complicated as you will not finish.

Tips:

  • Choose your favourite size depending on your chosen media for 3 hours.
  • You can work on this question and question 2 at the same time if you need drying time.
  • Photographs often don’t give good illusions of spatial depth so be careful about slavishly copying them. �Don’t flatten your forms!
  • You may use a netbook BUT don’t waste time!

Sequence:

Lightly pencil in the composition.

Put in washes for the underpainting. Do you need to leave areas of the paper as your whites?

Then start building up your layers as you model with tonal values.

Callanish, Isle of Lewis, United Kingdom�The Callanish Stones are an arrangement of standing stones placed in a cruciform pattern with a central stone circle. They were erected in the late Neolithic era, and were a focus for ritual activity during the Bronze Age.

The Venus of Willendorf is a famous Paleolithic (Early Stone Age) carved stone figure. Use ANY drawing medium to showcase your drawing skills.

Tips:

  • Look carefully at both the figure and the ground.
  • Start with a light soft layout – no hard outlines!
  • Assess tones accurately and be careful not to lose your contrast.
  • Aim at capturing the form and the texture of this stone figure.
  • You may investigate the image using a netbook BUT don’t waste time on non-essentials.
