The lagoon of Aveiro (Ria de Aveiro) is essentially characterised as a shallow coastal lagoon located northwest of the Portuguese coast and connected to the Atlantic Ocean through an estuary known as Barra

Due to  greenhouse effect, melting

of the polar ice caps, raising of sea level and global warming, it is expected that:

By 2050 these areas are expected to be at risk of flooding from rising tides due to climate change.

CONSEQUENCES OF CLIMATE CHANGES IN THE AVEIRO REGION:

Aveiro area is very vulnerable to climate change, due to its low topography and direct connection of the lagoon to the sea.

1- NEGATIVE IMPACT ON BIODIVERSITY

The Lagoon, integrating several protection areas of the Natura 2000 Network, is particularly important because its characteristics in terms of biodiversity are unique.

Species less resistant to salinity may die due to the invasion of the lagoon by salt water as the sea level rises.

2- NEGATIVE IMPACT ON AGRICULTURE

The increased salinity in the water of the lagoon reaches the fertile land in the lower Vouga river, in the Cacia region, making it infertile.

3- Possible need to relocate people and put an end to salt extraction in the traditional way

The rising water in the lagoon bursts the walls of the salt pans. Rebuilding them is no longer profitable and salt production could be endangered.

SOLUTIONS TO AVOID THE CONSEQUENCES OF CLIMATE CHANGES IN THE AVEIRO REGION:

we should all apply the 3 R's policy:

  •      REDUCING CONSUMPTION;
  •      REUSE MATERIALS;
  •      RECYCLING (we must separate waste at home);

countries must comply with the Paris agreement, which establishes as a goal that

 the increase in the planet's average temperature does not exceed a two-degree increase

over the pre-industrial level and, ideally, below 1.5 degrees difference.

 IN THE AVEIRO REGION:

  • We must protect the sand dunes;

  •  Local authorities should study the situation and resize

the sluice gates and locks, which were inaugurated in 1985 .

There will be serious consequences if the climate keeps changing. If we don't reduce climate changes, our planet will surely be destroyed.

It's already late, we must do something at once!
