The Inventors and Inventions that changed Society
From the earliest stone tools of the Paleolithic era to the latest digital advances, human beings have created new inventions and technologies that have shaped civilizations and transformed life on earth.
Humankind’s ability to innovate was particularly apparent during the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries, which ushered in significant developments in mass production, transportation, industry and communication. These sweeping changes paved the way for the technological leaps and bounds of the 20th and 21st centuries. The world of invention is never static:
Expectations and capabilities evolve with every step forward, and each new generation boasts its own set of innovative thinkers. Here a few of the key Industrial working methods that have helped change our society.
Key Industrial working methods
The Bessemer Process
The Bessemer process was the first inexpensive industrial process for the mass production of steel from molten pig iron before the development of the open hearth furnace. The key principle is removal of impurities from the iron by oxidation with air being blown through the molten iron.
The Assembly Line
An assembly line is a manufacturing process (often called a progressive assembly) in which parts (usually interchangeable parts) are added as the semi-finished assembly moves from workstation to workstation where the parts are added in sequence until the final assembly is produced.
Mass Production
Mass production, also known as flow production or continuous production, is the production of large amounts of standardized products, including and especially on assembly lines. Together with job production and batch production, it is one of the three main production methods.
Key Inventors
Thomas Edison
Lewis Latimer
Alexander Graham Bell
Henry Ford and the Model T
Special Note about Henry Ford
He did not invent the automobile. What he did was greatly improve the production methods for making a car. He is credited for developing the ASSEMBLY LINE process, which eventually lead to MASS PRODUCTION.
Wilbur and Oliver Wright
Connecting Activity
Choose an inventor or inventions that you feel has had the greatest contribution to society. Write a THANK YOU LETTER to that inventor. In your letter describe key background information about the inventor and his/her invention. Detail the significance of that invention, as well as how that invention directly affects your life. Include an image of that invention in your letter.
(IT CAN BE AN INVENTOR FROM THE PAST OR A MODERN DAY INVENTOR)
