Santa Cruz High School is a comprehensive public school with a student population of approximately 1,150 in grades nine through twelve. SCHS is particularly noted for having a diverse student body. Students from various racial, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and lifestyles join to enrich their personal and academic experiences in an unusually compatible atmosphere. In addition to comprehensive college preparation and vocational curriculums, many special programs are available on our campus.

Santa Cruz High School utilizes the Excel Block Schedule. Under this model, students take three or four 90-minute classes each day for 18 weeks in the fall, and three or four different classes for 18 weeks in the spring. The daily 90-minute classes are equivalent to year-long classes in more traditional two-semester systems. This program has proven to be highly effective throughout the nation, California and here at SCHS.

“The vision of SCHS is to nurture life-long learners who demonstrate critical thinking, creativity, integrity and personal responsibility as members of our school and greater community. We collaborate to ensure equity to achieve college and career readiness for all students.”

English Department

The Santa Cruz High English Department welcomes you! We are a group of dedicated teachers who look forward to working with you for the next four years. Our program includes three years of foundation courses in which students study classic and modern American and world literature. We also teach about the rhetorical and literary devices of non-fiction and fiction, regularly assign narrative, expository, and persuasive essays, and enjoy lively discussions about how and why the assigned literature deepens students’ understanding of the human condition.

All of our English classes are college prep. Additionally, students have the choice to enroll in Honors English 2 during their Sophomore year, AP Language and Composition during their junior year, and the A.P. English Literature & Composition during their senior year. World Literature, and College Composition are also offered during the senior year.

Career Technical Education

Turn Your Dream into a Career

Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses combine academic rigor with hands-on learning. Our courses give students an opportunity to explore a potential career with real world experience!

CTE courses are taught throughout all the district’s high schools, and many articulate with a-g UC/CSU requirements, as well as articulate with Cabrillo College.

All CTE teachers collaborate with members of the business community to ensure their curriculum is relevant and up to date with today’s industry.

Students meet members of the business community in each class. Students finish the course with a resume, cover letter, letter of recommendation as well as work samples from their CTE course. The pathways taught at SCHS are:

  • Transportation: Intro automotive course as well as 2-year automotive program, ASE aligned course earning an industry recognized certificate and 2 levels of Bike Repair
  • Digital Media: Video and Animation I & II, Photo I & II, Web Design I & II, Graphic Design I & II

World Languages Department

The Spanish and French teachers use a holistic, communicative approach and we believe it is important to teach the language in realistic contexts. We encourage students to actively participate to become proficient in the target language. Even at the beginning levels, students regularly speak, write, listen and read in the target language. Students learn about the cultures of the target language through exposure to music, art, sports, recreational activities, festivals, history, geography and literature. Units are designed to meet the California Standards for World Language, which include Content, Communication, Cultures, Structures, and Settings. Activities reflect the integration of the four language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) and the modes of communication (interpersonal, interpretive and presentational).

Health & Physical Education

The teacher and students of Health (9th Core) will work together to create a classroom that is respectful, enthusiastic, comfortable, well organized and appropriately challenging. Using patience, clear communication, and a variety of teaching strategies we will support the learning styles of all students.

The goal of this class is to build on your knowledge and skills related to health and technology.  Health is defined as “the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease.” (World Health Organization)  Students will develop technology competencies using common software programs to research and/or present information related to our Health content.

I teach for many different reasons. I got into teaching because I come from a long line of teachers. My Mom was a teacher at Santa Cruz High School for 35 years and I saw how much she loved her job. It is such a rewarding career to be able to share your knowledge with others, and see how they learn and grow.

I became a PE teacher specifically because of my love for being physically active and living a healthy lifestyle. I’ve enjoyed playing different sports throughout my life and found a passion for working out at a young age. I teach because every individual deserves a safe learning environment where they can learn, make mistakes, and have a voice.

I love seeing my students empowered and encouraged to physically and mentally be their best selves. These are the times when we need physical activity the most, because it truly does benefit us in all categories of our lives. Remember to keep moving, keep positive, and breathe!

Visual & Performing Arts

Santa Cruz High has an award winning Visual and Performing Arts program. We wholeheartedly believe in a well-rounded, renaissance education that includes the arts as one of its central elements. We offer a variety of courses of different levels and many art forms including: Jewelry Design, Ceramics, Painting, Drawing, Photography, Varsity Band, Jazz Band, Theater, and Choir.

In these classes, we offer a place for students to develop self-expression, creativity, and technical, applicable skills. All of our classes provide hands-on, interactive experiences where students can immerse themselves in the process of learning and creating. Classes offer standards-based, sequential instruction by highly skilled teachers. Students will be given the tools and techniques to create and express themselves.

Students who wish to explore and develop at an introductory level, as well as those who wish to major in the arts in college are welcome to our classes. We do our best to differentiate instruction to meet the levels and learning needs of our classes. Our students have graduated and been successful in college and careers with the guidance and preparation from our exceptional teachers. Instructors have assisted with audition and portfolio preparation for college entrance with tremendous success.

Our art students regularly exhibit work throughout the county with great reception, the theater productions receive rave reviews, and the music performances are outstanding.

If you have any questions regarding our classes, please feel free to contact the teachers in that content area and they will gladly help.
