St Andrew's Cross

St Andrew is Patron Saint of Scotland. One of Christ’s four apostles. Died in Greece tied to a traverse cross for two days. His relicts were taken to Scotland. The town of St Andrews grew up around the church which was built to house the relicts. November 30 is the Scottish national holiday.

Thistle

The legend says that when the Scots

fought with the Vikings in 1263 the

Vikings wanted to surprise the Scots

army under cover of darkness. They walked

on patches of thistles with their bare feet and their howling cries of pain alerted the Scots who won the day.

Royal Standard

Also known as the Lion Rampant. Its use originated in the 11th century. Nowadays it is used officially at the Scottish royal residences of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh, and Balmoral Castle, Aberdeenshire when the King is not in residence.

Bagpipes

Their history goes back to the 14th

century. They were carried to battles. In

the 18th century they were forbidden to weaken Gealic culture. During world wars Highland regiments used pipers to recognise individual regiments. Because of high casualty rates they stopped using them.

Kilt

Originally it is the traditional dress of

men and boys in the Scottish Highlands.

Most often it is worn on formal

occasions and at Highland games

and sports events. The tartan patterns used to characterised individual clans, nowadays they represent individual regions, counties, societies, schools.

Highland Cattle

A Scottish breed of cattle. Their meat is leaner because they

get protected from cold from their hair. They are bred in cold

climates on inhospitable

lands that would not be

able to bring an

agricultural profit.

Whisky

Its history goes back to the 15 th century. Produced from

water and malted barley. It cannot contain any added

substances than caramel colouring. Minimum alcoholic

strength is 40%. If a product is called

whiskey, it was not produced in Scotland.

Scottish Independence

  • Scotland has its own parliament,
  • school system and legal system are different from the ones in other countries of the UK,
  • elected representatives from Scotland make up just 9% of the 650 members of the House of Commons,
  • they claim they contribute to the UK budget more than they get from it,
  • referendum on independence was held on 18 September 2014 and it was not successful.
