WHAT IS SMOKING?

🡪 The act of inhaling and exhaling the fumes of burnt plant material

🡪 These materials can include marijuana and shisha, however it is mainly associated with tobacco (which contains the addictive chemical nicotine)

  • 1.3 billion people use tobacco products worldwide
  • It is the actual smoke and particles from cigarettes that does the damage, which means people near smoking feels almost same effects

Cigarettes

  • Cigarettes are tobacco leaves wrapped up in paper.
  • They release over 5000 chemicals, some of which are very toxic, such as cadmium.
  • Tar is a sticky brown substance released into the lungs. It can stain fingers and teeth.
  • Tar increases your chance of developing not only cancer, but emphysema and COPD.
  • Carbon monoxide is released which can stop oxygen absorption
  • Nicotine is an addictive drug which can calm people down. Although it doesn’t cause harm, addiction combined with other products is dangerous

They can damage DNA, which we all know is the cause of cancer

They can cause addiction which itself can cause any problems such as;

  • Finance issues
  • Anger problems
  • Sadness and depression

Tar blocks lungs which can lead to difficulties breathing and many respiratory problems

  • E-cigarettes (also known as vapes) are electronic devices that simulate regular smoking
  • They work by vaporising liquids in a cartridge and then inhaling it like any other cigarette
  • Instead of inhaling smoke like normal cigarettes, vaping involves inhaling vapour.
  • The liquid in these vapes consist of up to 65 chemicals, 10 of which are also found in regular smoke and 26 of them known to being harmful to the body
  • Vaping also has more nicotine in it than cigarettes so people become more easily addicted to vaping

Vape devices designed for marijuana and oils

This is a PAX. Pax can be used to vape both dry leaf marijuana and oils, although it’s relatively costly at over $200.

This is used for dabs. Dabs (also known as wax) are concentrates of THC placed directly onto the coils of the vape device and, when heated, produce vapor for inhalation.

This device is used with THC oils, the active ingredient in marijuana,

  • THC is a chemical found in cannabis and produces the high sensation.
  • Newer vapes do include cannabis oil
  • CBD/Spice
  • Mental and physical health
  • The CDC have confirmed that Vitamin E acetate may have some effects on our health. As it is a thickening agent, it has similar effects to tar.
  • We don’t have enough information to say that vapes are significantly safer as they are still new. They could have a delayed effect on our health just like cigarettes do

Consequences

  • The legal age to buy cigarettes and vapes in the UK is 18 years old. The law which made it illegal to sell e-cigarettes or vape juice to anyone under 18.
  • It goes against the rules of the school and you could get a permanent term exclusion
  • You could get expelled if caught distributing them
  • You could get sent to jail and have it put down on your permanent record if you are caught.
