1. About the plugin

Perusall is a social eTextbook or eReader platform which allows students to me more engaged through a collectively reading methodology. This plugin also allows discusion and other forms of interaction, like adding files, videos, website screenshots and quizzes. The strong points of Perusall are the ability to comment anywhere along the document or video, providing a better learning experience for the student. Lastly, it also provides personalized metrics of each student, in order the check their progress.

2. How to get Perusall

  1. Go to https://perusall.com/
  2. Then on the navigation menu go to Support

  1. After this step click on Contact Perusall Support - https://support.perusall.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
  2. This last option will allow to make a request. The software is free for instructors and students, however a request must be made in order to initiate the contact with the support team of Perusall.
  3. A form will be displayed. You need to fill with your institutional email, subject, which in this case is to obtain the secret key and request to import the plugin to Moodle and in Issue type select – Key and secret request. It is highly recommended to attach two images – one of your institutional profile retrievable from your institutional oficial platform like Sigarra and also your instutitonal profile from your Moodle account.
  4. After these steps you just need to submit.

3.Secret Key and request

  1. After completing part 2, you will receive an email with all the details for installing Perusall in your Moodle environment.
  2. In this email you will find a button requesting the “Retrieve LTI credentials”.
  3. After this step you will receive the necessary files in a .zip foler.

4. Plugin Installation

  1. The plugin needs to be installed by your instutional technicians if you do not have access to the server where moodle is hosted.

  1. Go to your moodle environment and access with your institutional credentials.
  2. Select the desired course to integrale the Perusall resource.
  3. After you select your desired course, go and activate the edition mode of the current discipline.
  4. After the last step, add a new activitity or resource.

  1. From the selection box of the resources, pick external tool.

  • After this step start configuring the options of the selected module.

  1. When setting up the options of the external tool resource you must:
  2. Name the activity (e.g. teste);
  3. Select Perusall from the select box;
  4. Pay attention to the option Activity Conclusion. It might need some adjustments according to your preferences.
  5. After that you just need to save and go back to the discipline.
  6. Having completed the last step your topic on the discipline wall must look like the exemple on the image.
  7. Completed these last steps, click on the name of the activity to access Perusall interface.

  1. This is the Perusall interface, here you can create your course and add your assignments with the desired files or other content.
  2. Start by creating your course clicking on “Criar Disciplina”.

  1. Fill the fields with the info about your course and instution. Also add the course period and other details.
  2. Save the changes and you will be redirected to the course interface wbere you can add your assignments and files.

  1. This is the interface of your course in Perusall.
  2. Let’s start by adding our documents that will complemente our assignments.
  3. Just go to the Documents tab.

ON THE DOCUMENTS TAB YOU WILL HAVE ACCESS TO A SET OF OPTIONS YOU CAN CHOOSE FROM.

  1. Textbook – a selected book or file from the personal Perusall library:
  2. Web Page – A web page screenshot from a URL you post;
  3. Dropbox Documents – Documents or files you have uploaded on Dropbox;
  4. Documents from my computer – The most common option, since it allows you to pick your own files. We highly recommend to upload on .pdf format.
  5. Video – Upload a video from a Youtube link. A great resource to interact with your students since it also allows comments and markers.
  6. Podcast – Search a specific podcast you like to share with your students or post the feed URL or other personalized URL.
  7. iClicker (paid solution) for creating forms and quizzes;
  8. Folder – option that aggregates several files;
  9. Student upload folder – Make a folder available for students to upload their own files.

  1. For the purpose of this guide let’s add a pdf file and a video from Youtube.
  2. Select the option “Documents from my computer”.
  3. A pop up will apear for you to select the desired .pdf file.
  4. Select your file.
  5. The file will upload and look like the example in the image.

  1. Now will add a video.
  2. For that select video from the options tab.
  3. It will pop up a window to paste the Youtube video URL.
  4. Just paste the URL and the video will upload.
  5. It will be displayed like the example in the image.

  1. After adding your documents and files we will relate those with the assignments.
  2. For that go to evaluations tab and select the option “Add assignment”.
  3. A new window will pop up in order to set your assignment and relate the previous added documents.

  1. After setting up the assignment by selecting the contente to assign, giving the proper name and description of the task by going to the “Set name and deadline” tab, you will be ready to save the changes.
  2. Then your assignment will have the following interface. Here you will have already a set of options displayed to check this activity.

If you click on “open” the content will be displayed like this.

Here you can add your comments, check other students or instructors comments, read your notifications and make other apointments by using the tools on the right side bar.

  1. To add a comment you just have to highlight the element you wish in the document and it will automatically generate a discussion option on the right side bar.
  2. At this poing you can add new discussions, check how many comments were made and even aprove other comments.

  1. Lastly we will add a new assignment for the video content.
  2. For that go back to the “assignments” tab and “add assignment”.
  3. Give the assignment the name you want and it will be displayed like this.

  1. After that step, open the assignment to check how the interface of this activity will be displayed.
  2. Here you can watch the video and add comments whenever you want according to the current position of the vídeos timeline.
  3. For that just click on the button “Include Comments”

  1. By clicking on the button, it will be displayed the following screen.
  2. Here you can add your comments and then it will mark on the specific time of the timeline like you can see in the image.

  1. Lastly, going back to assignments you can check and monitor the activity metrics.
  2. Now you can see that we have a comment on the assignment number 2.
  3. When you have more participants or students enrolled the more metrics will be displayed for the instructor point of view analysis.
