What is 1:1 Technology in Education?

1:1 refers to each student having unlimited access to a device, most commonly chromebooks because they are the most affordable for school districts.

This can be an extremely powerful tool in school if implemented thoughtfully.

What is 1:1 Technology look like?

There are a few ways this can look like.

  1. Each teacher has a set of devices, enough for each student in their class.
  2. Students have a device they carry with them from class to class and even take home.

Why is it a Trend?

This technological trend really opens doors to almost all other trends we see in education today.

When students have access to a device teachers can create lessons that incorporate many levels of technology. These include:

  1. Cloud sharing
  2. Instant feedback
  3. Access to information
  4. Media creation
  5. Virtual tours

Is There a Downside?

1:1 can be a slippery slope when not implemented thoughtfully. Some of the concerns consist of:

  1. Little growth strictly on online based programs
  2. Less student engagement
  3. Too much screen time
  4. Word processing can create lazy writing

What are the Outlying Benefits?

When implemented thoughtfully, 1:1 devices can complement the classroom’s already engaging environment.

  1. Used 1-3 days a week, in addition to hands on activities
  2. Prepare students for careers that do not exist yet
  3. Opportunities to create state of the art lessons
