Amedeo Modigliani�Artist: “Bride and Groom” (12 July, 1884 – 24 January, 1920)

He was born in Leghorn, Italy, the youngest of four children in an old Jewish family.
In a home that was near poverty, he was doted on and spoiled by his �mother, older brothers and sisters. However, he became ill with typhoid
While ill, he became delirious, and ranted on about seeing the �paintings in the Palazzo Pitti and Uﬃzi museums in Florence.
His mother promised to take him to see them when he recovered. She kept her promise and arranged for Modi to study with Guglielmo Micheli, the best art teacher in Livorno and a member of an Italian group of Impressionists.
Modi studied with Micheli for 2 years and then developed tuberculosis, which would end his life within 20 years.
His family sent him south to recover and he spent time in Naples, Capri, and Amalﬁ. Unfortunately he had already developed a taste for low life, experimenting with drugs and alcohol.
On his way home, Modigliani visited Rome, Florence and Venice.
In late1905, Modigliani went to Paris, a place where he spent the rest of his life
He lived the bohemian lifestyle, frequenting cafes, never without drawing materials, be it sketch pad or table napkin and pencil, often doing portraits of the café habitués for a few pennies.
Modigliani destroyed many of his earlier works; only 25 of his sculptures are known to exist. Though he started as a sculptor, he was forced to give up sculpting as the chisel dust bothered his lungs

Because of the fact the world gained a painter whose portraits display his command of line and color by his skillful combining them to produce a ﬂow of contour and shape. He made drawing seem effortless, often completing 150 in a day!
Despite his short and often chaotic life, Modigliani managed to express through his art a zest for life.
He loved his art, women, children and humanity, but seemed to have knowingly chosen his way. His goal was to live “a brief life, but intense.” That he did.
Modigliani’s health continued to deteriorate and his friends hardly recognized him in his last years. In addition to failing physically, he had shaved his head and dressed in tattered clothing.
This is how he looked towards the end of his life.

Light and Shadow, Perspective and depth are almost nonexistent in his work but LINE was everything to Modigliani.

Look at several Modigliani’s works and note the many long, slim, oval faces with long, thin stylized noses a top elongated necks, and eyes that are frequently almond shaped and vacant, done as if in sculpture.

-The man seems to be enclosed in the rectangular shape with no escape-it is not known why he named it bride n groom since all lines point to a separation of 2 ﬁgures

He decided to devote himself to composing with the goal writing operas based on the Germanic and Greek myths and legends he had read as a child.
His mother tried to discourage Wagner from becoming involved with the theatre, but he was determined. It was during this time that he experienced for the only time in his life the discipline of a course in music theory.
He devoted himself faithfully for six months to the mastery of rigorous exercises in harmony and counterpoint.
Through his study of German mythology Wagner began to delve more and more into medieval German history, composing ﬁrst the opera, TANNHAUSER, and then LOHENGRIN.
His life was tumultuous as he traveled widely throughout Europe, conducting and composing all the while.

Wagner is a dominant ﬁgure in the European culture and had been the subject of more books and articles than any composer.
He was called both MONSTER and GENIUS
Despite all, his works are played and loved in the opera houses and concert hall of the world
Wagner loved Opera so much because he thought it was very exciting to use all art forms in a single performance.
Wagner would write the poetry, direct the dance and movement, paint the scenery, chose the colors for the costumes, compose and direct the music, EVERYTHING!
