Climate Change Connection

Composting is a wonderful way to teach students about recycling organic materials like food scraps and yard waste to create nutrient-rich soil, which helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. This beginning sound activity can serve as a companion to a unit of study on composting or as an extension activity after watching or reading about composting and climate change. Check out these resources about composting:

Teaching Tips

  • These activity sheets can be completed independently during whole group or center work or as a small group activity with the teacher.
  • Words and pictures can be changed out to focus on other skills, such as rhyme or phoneme manipulation.
  • Teacher should preview the words with students to avoid confusion.
  • Check out the companion activity Composting Beginning Sounds.
