Overview of ENL Program

  • 22 students in Grades 3-5 receive ENL support
  • Instructional Settings:
    • Regular Classroom
    • Small Groups
    • Individual Sessions
  • Focus on Academic Language and Content Area Instruction
  • The number of minutes and type of support is determined by the student’s language proficiency level and areas of need:

(speaking, listening, reading and/or writing)

Units of Study for Grades K-8

ENL Units of Study Requirements

5 Levels of Proficiency determined by NYSESLAT exam given in May:

  • Entering - Beginner
  • Emerging - High Beginner/Low Intermediate
  • Transitioning - Intermediate
  • Expanding - High Intermediate
  • *Commanding - Proficient in General Education Class w/ support

* Students who have tested Commanding do not need

to take the NYSESLAT again.

  • Cohort and Small Groups

  • Individual Instruction - Open for all students when needed
