Country attractiveness for expansion is assessed by level of VC activity and expected market potential

Description

Example

Tier I

Endeavor-ready markets: Mature entrepreneurial ecosystem with robust pipeline of HIEs

  • Australia
  • South Korea
  • Thailand
  • Estonia

Tier II

High-potential markets (soon to be Endeavor-ready): Entrepreneurial ecosystem with Unicorn/Soonicorn companies and/or benefits from combining footprint with smaller existing Local Offices

  • Croatia
  • Tanzania
  • Senegal

Tier III

Immature markets (not Endeavor-ready): Early-stage ecosystem that should be monitored for future expansion opportunity and one-off EE selection by another Local Office

  • Azerbaijan
  • Guatemala
  • Zimbabwe

High VC Activity($ invested, # transactions)

Low VC Activity

High Mkt. Potential

(population size, real GDP growth, PPP / capita)

Low Mkt. Potential

42 of 147

Standalone Country Local Offices will continue to be launched by Global in Tier I ecosystems where operating in an exclusive market makes sense. This model works best in a country with:

  • Opportunity for us to have transformative impact in meaningfully sized ecosystems through Endeavorization of Big Bubbles
  • A robust pipeline of High-Growth, High-Impact Entrepreneurs (many existing and potential Outliers);
  • Significant demand by EEs to expand into that market; and
  • Aspirational founders and business leaders (increasingly our EEs) who pull Endeavor in.

Endeavor Ukraine

COUNTRY HOME OFFICE

Our belief now matters: Huge potential for Ukraine’s founders to continue leading the way in deep tech and innovation.

CEE remains an important region for Endeavor with startup value doubling over the last 5 years (to €213B today). Poland, Ukraine, and Estonia lead the way, contributing over 50%.

Resilient entrepreneurs will be an essential part of the Ukraine’s rebuild and resurgence.

of tech founders intend to return to Ukraine post-war; keeping this link will be important to ensure future role models for the next generation.

44 of 147

A new element of Expansion 3.0 will be strategically launching Regional Cluster Offices in Tier I and Tier II ecosystems in order to:

  • Accelerate progress in soon to be Endeavor-ready markets by selecting EEs from slightly smaller markets that have Unicorn/Soonicorn companies and sufficient pipeline, ideally selecting at least 3-4 EEs per year;
  • Anchor Regional Clusters in Tier I markets, ideally, where most founders do business;
  • Combine smaller Local Offices, where standalone Country model has not been ideal, to improve operating efficiencies and increase access to high caliber mentors, BMs, and investors;
  • Not all countries merit an Endeavor presence even in a Regional Cluster (i.e., Tier III) but could produce one-off EEs.

Regional ClusterHome Office

45 of 147

Cluster Criteria

Regional Clusters assessed based on four criteria

High regional cohesion and cross-border connectivity, and regional entrepreneur buy-in

Cluster will amplify Endeavor’s impact “elsewhere” and Endeavor still has space to become a/the key ecosystem player

Financial and other commitment from Board Members and key ecosystem stakeholders to create regional cluster

Regional Cohesion

Transformational Impact

Pull for Endeavor

Cluster includes three or more Tier I or Tier II countries*, a strong anchor-LO, and a robust pipeline that can generate 3-4 HIEs annually

Bulgaria/SEE: testing the cluster concept

REGIONAL CLUSTER

Scope & Steps

  • Bulgaria investigating (Endeavor office since 2015)
  • Framed & led by Global w/ set rules: working w/ Bain to hone criteria, launch grant, governance, et al
  • Exploring to determine if regional interest exits: (Tier I-II) Croatia; Tier II Serbia, Slovenia (Tier III) Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, N. Macedonia (add top EEs only, no team)

Rationale & Key Questions

  • Geographic proximity; stronger unified as one office
  • Soonicorn & Unicorn Outliers recruited for ISPs could add value to EE network, become Regional Lighthouses
  • Will Croatians accept Bulgaria as the anchor? Do Tier III countries in SEE merit Endeavor local presence?
  • What about Romania? What about Greece & Italy? All are part of SEE but currently standalone offices.

Selection

After Raising the Bar on EE Selection criteria, we’re continuing to hone in on Selection asa Service via strategies for ecosystem mapping, pipeline building, and value-added recruiting of Top Founders.

61 of 147

Entrepreneur Pipeline & Selection will continue to serveas the beginning of Endeavor’s flywheel.

To achieve Vision 2035, we must:

  • Nail our Mapping, Pipeline & Pre-Selection programs strategies to build our ecosystems
  • Double down on Selection as a Service to attract and engage TOP founders as well as high-potential “hotshots” w/ early promise
  • Continue our focus on quality vs. quantity at ISPs to build the Network of Trust for Top Founders
  • Expand our scope and mindset (Diasporas, Hubs, Regions) to eventually reach founders in 100 countries

Worldwide Selection Strategy

Aimee Connolly of Irish company Sculpted by Aimee during an interview at the 97th ISP in Rome.

62 of 147

Know Everyone

Mapping the ecosystem with the support of tools like Pitchbook helps us stay on top of every new and noteworthy deal, investor, company.

Tactics:

  • Map entire ecosystems, includingdiaspora networks
  • Leverage technology like Pitchbook (automated deal alerts) and Affinity (contact mapping) to keep mapping alive
  • Know when to Go Early — collaborate with Global to engage the best Hotshot founders (e.g. serial founders, “Tech Mafias”) soon
  • Also track Lighthouse founders -- the Unicorns & Soonicorns -- to FastTrac to ISP
  • Build and maintain relationships with top investors in your region: especially important for warm intros to most promising founders
  • Track key personnel at Outlier companies

Local Selection Objective

63 of 147

Mission-Aligned Pipelines & Programs

Tactics:

  • Focus on delivering Selection as a Service — think about the entrepreneurs’ experience as much as evaluating them
  • Top of funnel pipeline programs should be differentiated in the market, owned by Endeavor, and pipeline-generating
  • Orient ISP Pipeline on Quality over Quantity
  • Many founders in the local pipeline will NOT go onto an ISP — nail expectation management (off-ramps and local engagement opportunities)
  • Ensure mentor network keeps quality and pace with the needs of top candidates — incl. recruitment, engagement, feedback, offboarding
  • Avoid bureaucracy: Founders respond to #AlwaysAgile

Our unique value prop in Selection = focus on being value-add, even TRANSFORMATIVE.

Local Selection Objective

Sary Azakir and Wael Bizri (center) of Lebanese company Toothpick were selected at the 100th ISP in Dublin.

64 of 147

DO select the best founders at the best time; DON’T “over-process”

Tactics:

  • Recognize that our Selection funnel involves selling. Conduct staff training on Endeavor storytelling, tailoring the Endeavor pitch (incl. Endeavor Catalyst), and matching the right SOR mentors
  • Eliminate bureaucracy that creates friction in the candidate journey, especially within the LSP step (ensure agility, relevance & calibration)
  • We CAN select more mature businesses (if they can 10x), but we’d rather select TOP entrepreneurs earlier stage: Series A-B is the sweet spot. Positive entrepreneur & business signals, like Tier 1 investors and past ‘Multiplier’ experience, push us to go earlier

Selection is the start of the Entrepreneur Journey with Endeavor. Getting the right founders early is the key to our success.

Third

Company!

New EE Second Company Policy

To formally activate an EE’s second company, MDs should:

  • Meet with the entrepreneur and develop a common sense view of the business, including review of an existing deck.
  • Present the case to activate the Second Company to a decision-making body — most commonly, your board — and seek formal sign off. This process should be simple & seamless.
  • Keep the Global Selection and Capital teams closely looped in along the way, and document all meetings.

This policy applies when EE is the CEO of the new business. If the EE is NOT the CEO, please email selection@endeavor.org (cc’ing capital@endeavor.org) to discuss. LINK to full policy.

We want to bet on our EEs early in the next phase of their journeys. Formally activating second (or third…) companies must be uncomplicated.

EndeavorNext is a new program to help EEs write their next chapter after exit, whether they choose to build again, invest, or guide others. The first “pilot” of EndeavorNext will involve 3 tracks:

  • Explore: focuses on exposure and exploration for founders seeking open-ended guidance during their post-exit journey. We help them intentionally design their next chapter and/or learn from those who’ve opted for a much-needed break.

  • Stealth: for founders ready to take the plunge again. This track allows these talented serial entrepreneurs to consider where to build, what to build, and with whom to build it.

  • Founder2Funder: targets exited founders eager to transform their experience into strategic investments in the next generation - as angels or institutional VCs.

We are redefining entrepreneurial success and ecosystem building through the Multiplier Effect™

As recently featured in a November 2024 article in Forbes: “Without the mindset of paying it forward, you might have one, two,or three unicorns, but that’s it. Today, LatAm is home to almost 50 unicorns, many of which trace their start to earlier Endeavor Multipliers™ — the most successful founders who pay their success forward by mentoring, investing in, and training the next generation.”

The process whereby successful entrepreneurs in a local market train, mentor, and invest in the next generation. Through the Multiplier Effect™ tech ecosystems are jump started and sustained.

Endeavor Multiplier Effect™

Why It Matters

As more successful foundersadopt a pay-it-forward ethosand multiply their impact, themore local entrepreneurship and innovation thrive.

Even a small group of 3-4 founders who become Endeavor Multipliers — by growing their Bubbles of Influence & Impact — will generate the Endeavor Multiplier Effect™ transforming an entire ecosystem.

With 3-4 BIG BUBBLES, the ecosystem connections are dense, showing the Endeavor Multiplier Effect™ at play.

Without the Big Bubbles,

and their connections — w/o

the Endeavor Multiplier Effect™ — the landscape is barren.

Changing the Language of Success

To ignite this pay-it-forward ethos beyond our Endeavor Network,we need to change the language of success — from metrics anchored on greed (valuation, net worth) or guilt (ESG score, charity) — to a founders’ Multiplier Effect (multiplier map).

Endeavor Multiplier Maps™:

  • Quantify and visualize the impact a single founder generates through mentoring and investing, as well as training employees to be next-generation founders (e.g., “PayPal Mafia”).
  • Enable global business leaders and governments to understand the power of supporting local founders to grow and give back
  • Create a fun and measurable metric: Big Bubbles of Influence & Impact can become the new yardstick of entrepreneurial success!

  • Our current Endeavor Multiplier Map™ creation was an MVP, validating an idea withminimal features.
  • We will be evolving our data collection & visualization capabilities in coordination with Globant to develop a more robust, advanced platform.
  • Individual Endeavor Multiplier Maps™ will internally generate an Endeavor Multiplier Score™ that will enable us to depict more accurately the size of each founder’s “Bubble.”
  • The Big Bubbles of Endeavor Multipliers can become the gold standard of entrepreneurial success, inspiring younger founders to pay it forward and create thriving ecosystems by increasing their own Bubbles of Influence and Impact.
  • This new platform will be opt-in and ALWAYS founder first.

Vision 2035 is an inflection point. This is a time of both opportunity and disruption, success will take time and careful management.

Strengthening Local Board engagement is critical to achieving Vision 2035. An updated Affiliate Agreement will set clear expectations for LOs, hold LOs accountable to our worldwide mission, and reinforce compliance requirements

We will always experiment and learn. Incorporating standard performance and talent processeswill focus LOs on mission aligned priorities while ensuring development of our people, ultimately making Endeavor a “Best Placeto Work”

Critical to our BHAGs, RMPs will serve as an extension of Global ensuring that local and regional goals roll up into our Vision 2035, elevating the entrepreneur experience through regional activities, developing regional corporate partnerships to sustain LOs.

Our Global/WW leadership team structure must evolve to drive progress, attract and retain top talent, and reinforce Endeavor’s position as the global Network of Trust for entrepreneurs
