Graduation Credit Requirements

  • All students must earn 28 credits to graduate.
  • Most courses equal 1 credit; some equal 2 credits.
  • Promotion to the next grade level is based on credits earned.
  • All students must complete CPR training before graduation.

Credit Benchmarks by Grade Level

  • Sophomore: 6 credits and pass English I.
  • Junior: 12 credits and pass two English courses.
  • Senior: 20 completed credits.

English Course Sequence

  • Required progression: English II, English III, English IV.
  • Standard, Honors, and AP levels available.
  • AP Language & Composition: eligible sophomores and juniors.
  • AP Literature and AP Research: eligible juniors and seniors.
  • Some students with GPA 2.2–2.79 may be required to take CCRG.

Mathematics Requirements

  • Students must earn 4 math credits aligned to post-secondary plans.
  • Required: Math II and Math III.
  • Fourth math options include Math IV, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus, or AP Statistics.
  • Honors options are available.

Science Requirements

  • Students must earn 3 science credits.
  • Course options include Physical Science, Earth & Environmental Science, Biology, and Chemistry.
  • Advanced options: AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Earth & Environmental Science.
  • Honors courses available at each level.

Social Studies Requirements

  • Students must earn 4 social studies credits.
  • Required: World History, Civics Literacy, American History, Economics and Personal Finance.
  • Elective option: AP Human Geography.

Health and Physical Education

  • Health and Physical Education is required for graduation.
  • Additional options: Beginning Weights, Advanced Weights, Athletic Conditioning, Honors Fitness.

Elective Requirements

  • Students must complete 12 elective credits.
  • Elective areas include CTE, World Languages, Fine Arts, NJROTC, Physical Education, and Holocaust & Genocide Studies (Honors).
  • Students select a course cluster to fulfill concentration requirements.

World Languages Information

  • World language courses are not required for graduation.
  • Two courses in the same language are recommended for admission to most four-year colleges.
  • Available languages include Spanish and French.

Fine Arts Concentration

  • Students must complete 4 arts courses for an arts concentration.
  • Options include Band, Chorus, Theater, and Visual Arts.

NJROTC Concentration

  • Students complete a concentration by taking 4 NJROTC courses.
  • One NJROTC course may be taken each semester.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) Concentration

  • Students must complete 2–3 CTE courses.
  • At least two courses must be in the same cluster, with one at Level II.
  • Completion makes students eligible for the WorkKeys Test in senior year.

Career Path Opportunities for 11th–12th Grade

  • Advanced Study (Honors): application and teacher approval required.
  • Internship (12th Grade): requires employment and transportation.
  • Pre-Apprenticeship (12th Grade): spring semester program with classroom and workplace learning.

Automotive Service Courses

  • Auto Service I and Auto Service II are offered through HCC at Pisgah.
  • These courses are not available during freshman year.

Dual Enrollment: Haywood Community College

  • Students interested in HCC courses should review course descriptions and meet with their counselor.

Alternate Course Selections

  • Each student must select four alternate courses.
  • Choose alternates you are interested in taking.
  • Students may be enrolled in alternate selections if needed.

Academic Planning Guidance

  • Consider your post-secondary goals, grades, reading level, work ethic, and standardized test scores.
  • Follow teacher and counselor recommendations to support academic success.

  • Middle School Registration occurs mid to late March.
