What is the periodic law?

In 1869, Dmitri Mendeleev and Lothar Meyer individually came up with their own periodic law "when the elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number, certain sets of properties recur periodically."

  • Atomic numbers determine of chemical properties.
  • Atomic number is also the number of protons (and electrons) in an atom
  • The periodic law is found to help determine many patterns of many different properties of elements

Task: Create models (diagram/chart) of properties of the Periodic Table

  1. Color code the families in the periodic table. Should have 9-10 families in your key.
  2. Label the following parts of the periodic table using all of these labels: period numbers, group numbers, mass number and atomic number (what and where to find this info), atomic symbol.
  3. Label the elements as solids, liquids or gases by putting an s, l or a g in the box.
  4. Choose 2 of the following properties to research, label or color code:
    1. Melting Point
    2. Boiling Point
    3. Electronegativity
    4. Valence Electrons
    5. Reactivity
    6. density
