Social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age that shape health.

Addressing these social determinants of health is important for improving the community's and individuals' health and reducing health disparities.

ECONOMIC STABILITY

The key issue economic stability is trying to address is poverty and how certain factors can impact one's ability to achieve it

    • The availability of affordable housing, public transportation, public parks, and the ability to safely walk in your neighborhood via paved roads and sidewalks are key issues in how the neighborhood and physical environment affect your health.

EDUCATION

Having access to early childhood education (ex: preschool), ability to access information in your language and opportunities to attend higher education institutions within a reasonable distance can play a role in determining your health outcomes

Fact: Between Bakersfield and Stockton there are only 7 public and private 4-year universities (over 200-mile stretch), this is the same number available in the city of San Francisco

    • Food insecurity, food deserts and access to healthy options are health determinants which also play a role in economic stability
    • “Food insecurity is defined as the disruption of food intake or eating patterns because of lack of money and other resources” (Healthy People 2020)
    • Food deserts are communities where convenience and liquor stores are more common than grocery stores and where they lack affordable and nutritious food
    • In 2017, “one in five residents in the City and County of Fresno received food stamps or other supplemental food assistance” (Fresno Bee, 2018)

    • Addresses the lack of community engagement, limited community support systems such as after-school programs, the prevalence of discrimination and mass incarceration (school-to-prison pipeline) as issues that can determine one's health outcomes
