Parent & Family New Student Orientation

College of Liberal Arts Advising Overview

• No assigned advisors, but students are welcome to request a specific advisor.
• Zoom appointments (currently) made through TUportal (online appointment system).
• Advisors help with major/minor selection (35 majors and 39 minors), course registration, understanding policies/procedures, and university resources.

Academic Cycle

• Add/Drop Period (full-term courses)
• First 2 weeks (August 22^nd - September 6^th)
• Make revisions as needed during this time.
• Course Withdrawal (full-term courses)
• September 7^th - December 5^th
• `Students are financially responsible for any withdrawn courses and they will remain on their transcript as a ‘W’.

FERPA Waiver

• FERPA Waiver
• Allows students to consent to the release of all of the information from their education records to parents, guardians, or other appropriate persons.
• STUDENT must complete the FERPA Waiver in their TUportal.

Important Policies

• Academic Standing
• Good – Minimum cumulative and semester 2.0 GPA.
• Warning - Semester GPA falls below a 2.0.
• Probation - Less than a 2.0 GPA for two or more consecutive semesters.
• Course Repeat Policy
• Allows 3 attempts of a course
• Failure to complete a course after a third attempt may require change of major and/or college.

• Permitted for two consecutive terms (one time only).
• Excused Withdrawal
• Petition process for an entire semester due to an extenuating circumstance.
• Incomplete Coursework
• Contract between the instructor and student due to an extenuating circumstance.

• CLA 1001: First Year Seminar Course (optional)- The CLA First Year Experience introduces freshmen students to the rich diversity of opportunities and resources available to them, both university wide and in the College of Liberal Arts.

Encourage Your Student to:

• Visit a CLA Academic Advisor at least once a semester.
• Advocate for themselves & be proactive.
• Utilize resources & engage with the institution/community.
• Register for a freshman seminar.
• Speak with instructors & TA’s when struggling.
