Comparing is when you look at what is similar and what is different.

Hand out the ‘Compare the groups’ activity sheet. The learners’ task is to write short sentences to compare the groups. Ask them to fill in the missing words for the first and second sets of groups, then to write their own sentences for the third set of groups. Encourage learners to compare how items are grouped and how many items are in each group.

Note: Encourage learners to reuse the ‘Vocabulary for describing’ handout to support them with this activity.

Explorer task: Ask learners to write a third sentence under the groups using vocabulary such as ‘more than’, ‘less than’, ‘most’, and ‘least’.

Scaffolding opportunity: Provide learners with two or three groups of physical objects, ensuring that they are grouped by identifiable properties. Ask learners to describe the groups and record their discussion using talk buttons or dictation tools.
