In Social Studies this week, we will be finishing Week 6: Clash of the Nations and moving into Week 7, which is all about the causes and consequences of the French and Indian War. Students will have an OPEN NOTES quiz on Tuesday, August 26th. In order to prepare for this, please have your child review their notes each night to become familiar with the material.
GRAMMAR & WRITING:
This week in Grammar, we will be focusing on the skill of subject-verb agreement. Students will need to use their knowledge of what a subject and verb are from last week in order to build this skill. We will have a short quiz on Thursday.
In Writing, we are working on a Constructed response this week. Students will use the R.A.C.E. strategy to complete an answer to a question in class this week.
R: Restate the question
A: Answer the question
C: Cite evidence from the text
E: Explain how the evidence supports your answer
READING:
In Reading, we will finish reading The Tale of Despereaux this week! We have made so many connections throughout this text, and I hope you have heard all about it at home! We will have our final quiz on Thursday, August 28th.
We will begin a BOOK REPORT next week. Please have your child thinking of a possible book that they would like to read for this project!
We should begin checking books out from the library very soon. Please encourage your child to read every night to increase fluency and vocabulary exposure-two very important things in building comprehension skills!
In Science, students will be learning about the reflection of light:
Students will also learn about the refraction of light:
FACT FLUENCY: Students will be tested on multiplication facts x4 on Tuesday, August 26. Be sure to spend time studying and practicing the x4 facts! Students will have 1 minute to complete 25 facts. To show mastery, students are to accurately answer at least 23/25 facts.
Make sure to look over the MULTIPLICATION QUIZ SCHEDULE found on my website to help keep your student on track.
SPIRAL REVIEW: We will finish up SPIRAL REVIEW WEEK 2 this week with an open notes weekly quiz (QUIZ 2) on Thursday, August 28.
The weekly Spiral Review should be kept in your child’s blue math folder. We complete a section a day (5 questions daily) together in class. Some of it is quite new content. I do take time to work through, explain and model. After we have completed all sections together, students will be asked to place it in the prongs of the folder. That way it is ready and available to use on the open notes spiral review quiz. NOT all questions on the spiral review quizzes will be counted in the grade due to readiness, complexity, and time spent on the content. For example, I will NOT be counting long division in these upcoming spiral review quizzes.
This week in math students will:
Skill #1 COMPARING NUMBERS
Students will use their knowledge of place value to compare numbers <, >, or =.
For example: 628,349 > 68,349 82,326 < 513,407 59,321 = 59,321
We will explore various strategies for determining accurate comparisons, such as comparing PLACE VALUES and EXPANDED FORM.
Students will also practice ordering numbers from LEAST to GREATEST as well as GREATEST to LEAST.
Skill #2 ROUNDING NUMBERS
Students will also use their knowledge of place value to round numbers to a given place:
Determine whether each number has been rounded to the nearest thousand, the nearest ten thousand, or hundred thousand.
A company makes 745,093 soccer balls in one year. To then nearest thousand, how many soccer balls does the company make? Rounded to the nearest thousand the company makes about 745,000 soccer balls.
