ACCESS for

English Language Learners

(ELL)

24 of 32

NJ ACCESS for English Language Learners (ELLs) Overview

  • All school districts in New Jersey must administer the ACCESS for ELLs language proficiency assessment to all ELLs in grades K–12.
  • Multilingual students identified as ELLs must participate in the assessments even if parents/guardians have refused services for the student.
  • Results from the ACCESS for ELLs are used in the calculation of schools’ and districts’ performance on the Progress to English Language Proficiency (ELP) indicator for ESSA school accountability.

24

25 of 32

ACCESS for ELLs Overall Proficiency Levels

1 – Entering - Knows and uses minimal social language and minimal academic language with visual and graphic support.

2 – Emerging - Knows and uses some social English and general academic language with visual and graphic support.

3 – Developing - Knows and uses social English and some specific academic language with visual and graphic support.

4 – Expanding - Knows and uses social English and some technical academic language.

5 – Bridging - Knows and uses social and academic language working with grade level material.

6 – Reaching - Knows and uses social and academic language at the highest level measured by this test.

Action Steps

28 of 32

Action Steps

  • Strategic plan goals for achievement have been set for the 2024-2025 school year.
    • Increase the passing rate by 7% over the 2022 baseline data in ELA and Math.
  • The following areas are prioritized:
    • Implementation of a fully revised K-5 ELA curriculum and associated professional development to more fully address a consistent approach across the four schools.
    • Staff, grade level and team meetings focused on consistent teacher and student look fors across the district in the areas of ELA and Math.

28

29 of 32

Action Steps

  • Building and staff student growth goals are tied closely to NJSLA and iReady data.
  • Administrators and teacher conduct an analysis of iReady and NJSLA standards reports to determine any patterns in performance with specific standards that should be proactively addressed within each building and grade level.
  • Benchmark assessments (iReady, Lexia, etc.) are scheduled to monitor growth and progress during the school year.
  • Staff review assessment data across the school year to monitor student growth and progress and make planning and instructional adjustments necessary to support students.

29

30 of 32

Action Steps

  • WMS implemented a pilot ASAP program to address a tiered system of supports through use of pull out, coteaching, and WIN ASAP periods.
  • Federal grant monies are dedicated to the continued provision of extended day high frequency individual and small group tutoring supports for eligible students.
  • Provide embedded opportunities for students to engage in assessment questions that address the unique demands of the NJSLA and specific New Jersey Student Learning Standards.
