Paragraph Reminders - Check your draft:

  • Citations: According to the teacher, “you should cite quotes like this” in your essay (Zittergruen 101).
  • Contractions: We do not use contractions in formal writing. Change your contractions to two words. For example: don’t = do not, wouldn’t = would not
  • Helping Verbs: Limit your use of helping verbs:
    • am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been, have, has, had, do, does, did, shall, will, should, would, may, might, must, can, could
    • For example: The author is showing his point when…. The authors shows his point when…..
  • Domain vocabulary: try to have 10-20 domain vocabulary words (underlined) in each paragraph
  • Regular Vocabulary: Be sure you are using powerful regular vocabulary words. Avoid terms like: nice, mean, bad, good
  • Color coded, double-spaced
