Portfolio Protocol

Original Candler County Writing (Literacy) Portfolio Transition Process

1) Each student will have a writing portfolio

2) Writing will be added to the folder each year in accordance with the Candler County Writing Plan

3) The checklist attached shows the types of writing that is to be added to the folder each year. It is guided by the Georgia Department of Education frameworks, Georgia Performance Standards, Common Core Georgia Performance Standards, and the focus for each grade level.

4) At the end of the year, the writing folder will be passed to next year’s teacher in vertical PLC meetings so that the writing folder follows the student from year to year, school to school.

Original Candler County Writing (Literacy) Portfolio Transition Process

5) These meetings should occur in post-planning if next year’s rolls have been made or in pre-planning of the following school term when rolls are available.

6) Student essays will provide a wealth of exemplar papers for teachers to use to guide instruction.

7) Rigor will be increased in each grade level as teachers analyze what the students produced the year before and plan instruction accordingly.

8) The writing portfolio will house the following:

· Writing Checklist

· Scoring Rubrics with teacher feedback attached to each essay

· Student Writing Pieces

Going digital...

  • Now that we have agreed to transition to digital writing portfolios, some procedural elements will change. This does not mean that the types of writing or the expected number of pieces have changed.
  • While we only require one published piece per genre to be passed to the next grade, one written piece per genre hardly gives students enough time to become proficient writers
  • Please see the following slides for a reminder of what is expected at each grade level

Whether completing the writing piece in google docs, or using pencil and paper, student samples should be housed in a folder on google drive

12 of 57

Which samples should be included and why?

  • Cold writes provide a clear picture of what students can do independently
  • Samples of student work included in the portfolio should be indicative of what the student is capable of
  • Independent work samples serve as formative pieces for teachers receiving the portfolios
  • These samples should be used at the beginning of the year as a “jumping off” point for writing conferences
  • They can also serve as an illustration of student growth from one point to the next
