Choose one of the following assignments to complete with the Summer Reading text of your choice. Summer reading assignments will be collected during the week of September 2 - September 5.

Choice 1: Sketch Notes

Students will create 3 pages of sketch notes while reading their book.

• Page 1 will track important or interesting quotes from throughout the story.
• Page 2 will follow the development of the main character throughout the story.
• Page 3 will be examples of symbols or figurative language used throughout the story.

Sketch notes are intended to be done on paper/pencil while thinking in pictures and phrases. Check out this video or this video for a quick overview on how to

Choice 2: Written Response

Students will write a 1 - 3 paragraph response to each of the following prompts about the book. Please do this writing without the use of Advanced Grammarly or AI resources such as ChatGPT. Assignments will be checked for plagiarism. The goal of the written response is to express your original thoughts and analysis of the story you read.

• Prompt 1: Pick 1 or 2 important or interesting quotes from the story. Explain why the quote is important and how it connects to the overall plot or development of the conflict.
• Prompt 2: Using evidence from the text, discuss one of the character traits of a main character in your story. Be sure to explain how the trait you are discussing plays a role in the character’s overall development throughout the story.
• Prompt 3: Share 2 examples of figurative language

or symbolism in the story. Explain how the figurative

language or symbol contributes to the the development

of a character, theme, or other aspect of the story.

Students will receive 1 formative assessment grade

during the first marking period on the summer

reading assignment.
