GOAL 2: Archives and Libraries

Choice A:

“Austrian archives”

- Scroll through the page and mention archive links for each of the main headings.

“Free online books …”

- In the left pane, click “Access level” and select Public.

- On the right side, scroll down several entries until you see “The Descendants of Wenzel …” and click the title.

- To scroll, hover over the area just to the left of “Creator” and click the arrow that appears.

- Show about 6-10 pages of the book and explain that it can be downloaded using the icon in the upper right,

GOAL 3: Military Records

Choice A:

“MH: Austrian Military Records”

- Summarize the second paragraph for an overview of important events in the formation of Austria.

- In Impact of Austrian military service read the first sentence and explain that most men served in the Austrian military.

- In Researching … review the three bullet points for information that is helpful to know before researching military records.

- Scroll through the long list of ethnicities and explain that they were the basis of identifying those who served in the military. Then read the last sentence in the paragraph above the list to explain about archives in successor countries.

- In Where to Find … review the links for successor countries.

- In What can be found … briefly review the bullet points for the types of information included in Austrian military records.

“Austro-Hungarian …”

- Scroll down several pages and explain that this is a deeper dive into military records that is good to explore at a later time.

Practice Exercise

- Open the main link for Record Search Practice and read the problem statement. Mention that learners can click the Hints link if necessary but should not click the Answers link. Tell the learners they have (x) minutes to find the answers. Then read the answers at the end of the time.

GOAL 4: Maps and Gazetteers

Choice A:

“Interactive Map”

- Click one or more of the province titles in the map to show resources for that province. Links are also available in the list below.

“Old Maps Online”

- Click Explore and then select several maps from the list at the right.

- Use the slider bar at the bottom of the screen to filter the map list by year.

“Austro-Hungarian Empire”

- Review the first map, and then scroll through the list of Austro-Hungarian Empire maps (left side) and select several of them.

“FamilySearch Places”

- On the site, click the first link on the left side.

- On the right side of the screen, mention the map and the information panels that can be opened.

- Click the main link on the left side to show an alphabetical list of locations in the country.

- Open one of the list items to see it in the map. Note that items with a right arrow will expand to additional items when clicked.

GOAL 5: Newspapers

Choice A:

“ANNO Collection”

- In the search bar enter “Bruckner”

- In the search results, select “Baden Newspaper …”

- Occurrences of “Bruckner are highlighted in the newspaper text.

- Click the available filters on the left side to show the options that can be used for searches.
