Purpose

The purpose of this organization shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character and citizenship in students of the Long Branch Middle School.

Equity for All Students

The Long Branch Middle School Chapter of the NJHS maintains policies and practices that are designed to prevent discrimination against any qualified candidate or member on the basis of race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender, and disability.

This policy of nondiscrimination applies to all practices, including the chapter administration and the selection, discipline, and dismissal of members.

Eligibility - How to Get a Form

  • Candidates eligible for selection must be second marking period 6th graders, or members of the 7th and 8th grades.

  • To be eligible for selection the candidate must have been in attendance for a period of two marking periods at the Long Branch Middle School.

  • Candidates eligible shall have a minimum average cumulative grade of 90%, with no grade lower than 83%, using the 100 point system. Any student with lower than 83% in any class OR does not have a 90% average will not be eligible.

  • Upon meeting the grade level, enrollment, and GPA standards, candidates shall then be considered based on their service, leadership, character, and citizenship.

School Activities

List all school-based activities in which you have participated during middle school. Please do not list activities from your elementary years, as these will not count.

List all elected or appointed leadership positions or other positions of responsibility held in school, community, or work activities. Only those positions in which you were responsible for directing or motivating others should be included.

Examples: elected student body, class, or club officer; committee chairperson; team captain; yearbook editor; community leader, tutor (outside of LBMS), camp counselor, religious education assistant teacher, dance assistant, mentoring program

Community Service Activities

List community and service activities in which you have participated. These can be individual or group service projects done either in or out of school. These should be any activities in which you participated for the betterment of your community

Examples: church groups; Boy or Girl Scouts; volunteer groups which benefit the community; community art endeavors; NJ Marathon Volunteer, library volunteer, LB beach cleanup, Autism Walk, Ronald McDonald House volunteer

Community Service Activities

The following do not count as community service:

  • Hours volunteered at businesses that are not non-profit organizations will not be accepted (some examples: doctor’s offices, sports gyms, sports teams, daycares)
  • Students may not include hours for any activity for which payment is received.
  • Students may not claim hours for baking food.
  • Volunteer hours will not be accepted from immediate or extended family members. This includes working in the home or at the parent’s place of employment (or classroom), unless for a charity event.

Work Experience, Recognition, and Awards

Though not a specific criterion for membership, please list below any job experiences, honors, or recognition that you have received that support your candidacy for membership in the National Junior Honor Society. Work experience may be paid or volunteer.

Examples: Perfect Attendance, Most Improved Writer, High Goal Scorer, Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Community Service

Selection Process

The faculty council reviews the candidate information forms, faculty input, and other relevant information to determine those who fully meet the selection criteria for membership.

Completing the form and receiving your interview does not guarantee acceptance into the NJHS, however we encourage you to complete the form and follow through with the process.
