Natural reserve “Dzhendema”

Location
Dzhendema is located in the central part of Bulgaria, in the Stara Planina mountain range. It lies within the boundaries of the larger Central Balkan National Park, which is one of the largest national parks in Bulgaria.It features steep cliffs, deep gorges, and lush forests. The area is known for its natural beauty and diverse landscapes.
Flora
Dzhendema is recognized for its diverse ecosystems. The flora is rich in species, including rare plants that are protected by national and international conservation agreements.Notable plants include species like beech, oak, hornbeam, and spruce, as well as many herbs and wildflowers. The reserve's unique ecosystem supports these plants in the varying elevations and habitats within the area.
Fauna
The fauna of Dzhendema Reserve is particularly notable for its variety of species, some of which are rare or endangered.Some key animals include:
Mammals: Wild bеars, deer, foxes and wolves
Birds: Golden eagles, falcons, and owls.
Reptiles and Amphibians: Snakes, turtles, frogs.
Insects: Butterflies and other insects that help pollinate plants.
Tourism
There are many beautiful tourist routes in the reserve. From there passes the road to the highest peak of “Stara Planina” - “Botev Peak”.
There is also a hut that is called “The Rai hut”. It’s located under the “Raiskite skali” and can only be reached on foot. The passage is not easy at all, especially in bad weather.
The eco-trail “Byala Reka” has been created for tourists who don’t like long hikes and it’s very popular. Wooden bridges cross the river and gradually reveal some of the beauty of the reserve
Interesting facts
The word “Dzhendem” comes from Turkish and it means “hell”. The high steep rocks, the old dark forests and the unpredictable harsh weather have contributed to the name of this amazing area with its attractiveness,where at the same time countless dangers lurk. But what is hell for humans, has become a paradise for wild animals. In the reserve, nature has been preserved for centuries and it’s untouched by human hands. That’s why it’s so beautiful there - the views are majestic and the forests are breathtaking.
The “Raiskoto pruskalo” is located in the reserve. This is the highest waterfall in the Balkans and it’s one of the most remarkable natural phenomena.
