Heart of Faith

In our lives, we often hear the term “heart of steel”. This title is given to those who get past obstacles with courage. But a better way to put it is “heart of faith”. It is God that provides us with the resources and strength to get through obstacles. And this can be seen through David and Goliath.

David’s Childhood

David was a young shepard from Israel. From a young age he:

  • Tended after his families flock
  • Was the most responsible of 8 siblings
  • And rejoiced in the Lord!

Infact, God called David “A man after my own heart”

War and Conflict

The Challenge

Challenge Accepted

The Philistines and Israelites were at war. As a last resort to win, the Philistines took Goliath and challenged the Israelites to defeat him. Goliath was 9 feet and extremely strong.

Saul was told by God to anoint David to be King. Shortly after he was anointed, David asked Saul if he could take on Goliath's Challenge.

Don’t Judge a Book By It’s Cover

Soon enough, the long anticipated fight between David and Goliath

began. Almost everyone expected Goliath to win. Their beliefs were further pushed when they saw David walk in with only a rock and sling.

He reached into his bag and took out a stone, which he slung at Goliath. It hit him on the forehead and broke his skull, and Goliath fell face downward on the ground. And so, without a sword, David defeated and killed Goliath with a sling and a stone!

David’s Childhood

Throughout David’s story, 3 main emotions are portrayed:

  • Fear
  • Pride
  • Strength

In the end, all of these worldly emotions were proven to be futile in the face of God.

Emotions

2

Pride

Goliath and the philistines felt immense pride in their “Power”. They saw themselves as greater than God, and undefeatable.

1

Fear

The Israelites were scared when they saw Goliath, as they thought they had no chance of defeating him. They were also scared for David, after hearing he was going to fight Goliath.

3

Strength

Goliath was 9 feet, and extremely “strong”. Meanwhile, David appeared to lack strength. This made both the Philistines and Israelites doubt David.

Emotions

2

Humbleness

Goliath and the Philistines saw themselves as greater than God, which is a big sin. Their lack of humbleness led to their defeat. We are the Lord’s servants.

1

Fear of God

David did not fear Goliath. He knew that God had his back, and rejoiced. The citizens sinned by fearing Goliath. The only thing we should ever fear is the power of our Lord.

3

Strength by God

Contrary to the beliefs of others, David won. He did not need worldly strength to win, he only needed the strength of the Lord. He defeated Goliath with a single stone.

Fear of God

In life we often fear worldly things, like the dark or “monsters”. But rather, it is God we should fear. He created us, yet we still look down on him. By understanding the power and the glory of the lord, we can find strength with him rather than finding strength from unholy things.

Examples

Wrong

“I feel stressed for my exam, so I am going to listen to unholy music to distract me.”

Wrong

“I’m scared of losing my friends, so I am going to follow their unholy ways”

Wrong

“I am scared to show my parents my grades, so I am going to ignore them instead”

Right

“I feel stressed for my exam, so I am going to pray and study my best. I leave the rest to God.”

Right

“If I am scared of losing my friends, then they are not right for me. I trust the lord to provide for me.”

Wrong

“I am going to be honest and show my parents my grades, and trust that God will give me the strength to face them
