Merlin Bird-ID

Background: Merlin Bird ID is a free app from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology that helps people identify birds by photo, sound, or simple questions. When users record bird calls or log sightings, their observations contribute to eBird, supporting real research on bird populations, migration, and environmental change. Merlin turns everyday bird encounters—day or night—into meaningful contributions to bird conservation.

Preparation:

1. Download the Merlin Bird ID and eBird mobile apps and practice identifying birds.

Set the Stage

• Introduce the concept of citizen science using the definition of citizen science on this slide.
• Have participants create accounts on SciStarter.org and visit the Merlin and eBird project pages!
• Discuss the importance of birding or how Ebird and Merlin Bird ID is supporting research.
• Have participants download the Merlin Bird ID on their smartphone or tablet.

Dive In

• Play a demo video of how to use the Merlin Bird ID.
• Go outside and start birding!

You can do this right outside your library or organize a nature hike in a local park.

Suggest some mindful listening exercises to limit the noise from humans. With less noise, the birds will make more appearances and calls.

Take Action

• Once the group is more confident, try uploading your sightings to eBird as well, contributing to the national database of bird sightings.
• Reflect with your attendees: What did you experience? What birds were your participants able to identify? Was it challenging or easy?
• Ensure your attendees leave with the resources and knowledge needed to continue participating from home.
• Invite them back for another observation session.
