Using This Story

  • These stories were created as open educational resources to use with adult English language learners who have limited-literacy skills.
  • We encourage using the stories first without words, to introduce and develop students’ oral language before showing them the text.
  • Comic Sans font is used in the stories because it closely resembles handwriting.
  • The story is meant to be a resource, not a stand-alone curriculum.
  • The Yes/No and Wh- question slides are not meant to be shown to the students.

Helpful Hints

  • Slides with coins/bills are animated to come in one line at a time. Ask students, “What name?” click; then ask, “How much?”
  • The names of whose face appears on each is in the speaker notes. Ask students, “Who is this?” (citizenship)
  • For an extra challenge, have students write, rather than say, the answers before you show them.
  • Yellow “price tags” are also animated to appear once students have done the math.
  • The “What can I buy” slides do not all depict the correct amount shown on the price tags.
  • For an extra challenge, have the students add up the two items to see how much money they would need to buy both items pictured.
