Chemical, paint, and coating industries require different methods of mixing drums. For these applications, an agitator is able to mix solid materials or liquids together inside of a metal container.

Since there are many ways to mix fluids in a drum, it is important to get familiar with the different methods that can be used and the different types of Barrel Mixers that exist.

What is a Barrel Mixer?

- Direct drive mixers: are attached to the drum's shaft to directly mix the chemical inside the drum.

Bung mixing is used to mix materials within drums. However, they are not very effective, run at high speeds, and cause temperature issues. These mixers operate at high speeds, and often have a high shear rate because of their high speed. Typically they have a tiny and ineffective blade on them that turns the material.

Even if one replaces the bung mixer with an agitator, the material will still rotate at a high speed. It is important to slow down the process of mixing by using weight loads or chills.

What are other ways to mix in drums?

Multi-cone Mixers are made up of multiple cones that have been stacked on top. Multi cone agitators work by rotating the container, and having a spiral-shaped mixing shaft rotate within a few cones in order to mix chemicals.

End Cap Mixers have a mixing screw that allows chemicals to be mixed from the center of the barrel.

Side Press Mixeris designed for use in cylindrical drums. It has a side pressing fitting rather than a bung. This allows for a positive seal, and is easily attached to a mixer shaft.

Pallet Mixer is similar to an end cap activator, but uses paddles instead. The positive seal is needed for drum bungs to prevent leakage.

- Direct drive mixers have the shaft that attaches the mixer directly attached to the drum's rotating axis, which can be helpful in reducing the amount of vibration there is in the system.

- Vibratory Barrel Mixer can be used for mixing paint or other liquid chemicals together, rather than dry materials. This type of drum mixer uses a rotating mixer, an eccentric weight and a coupling device to reduce any vibration transferring to the drum.
