School Counselor Qualifications

  • Required to have a Master’s degree, at minimum
  • Credentialed within California.
  • Pursue continued education (attend regular trainings to fulfill our role within the school)
  • Uphold ethical and professional standards (outlined by the national counseling association)

  • Applying academic achievement strategies
  • Manage emotions and apply interpersonal skills
  • Explore and plan for college/career options

Why do children need School Psychologists?

  • All children & youth can face problems from time to time related to learning; social relationships; making difficult decisions; or managing emotions. School psychologists help students, families, and educators understand and resolve both long-term and short-term issues that students might face.

How We Support Students: Schoolwide Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

  • All counselors and therapists must maintain confidentiality.

Are students in trouble if they are sent to see the counselor?

School counselors do NOT provide discipline. School counselors are advocates, meaning we want to listen to students and help come up with solutions. While we cannot solve problems for students or families, we provide a safe place to be a safe person to talk to during difficult situations.

When can or should I contact the school counselor?

  • Concerns over student achievement
  • Family health problems
  • New student intakes
  • Discussing special needs of their child
  • Early discussion of potential crisis
  • Family difficulties or concerns (divorce, deportation, separation)
  • Homelessness or foster care

  • 504 Plans
  • Transition to high school

Mission Statement:

Darnall Charter School’s counseling program promotes equitable access and academic success for all students. The school counselors provide comprehensive services to students that are guided by collaboration with students, teachers, administrators, school staff, families and community stakeholders . The school counselors promote growth in the academic, career and social/emotional domains, that is guided by an underlying belief in the ability of all students to achieve.

• short-term counseling to students

• referrals for long-term support

• collaboration with families/teachers/administrators/community for student success

Let’s review some concepts

Yellow
