Fiscal Update

  1. Challenges
    1. Revenue Limit is projected to drop about 200 thousand
    2. 4%+ decrease in valuation across the district
      1. PdC City drop of almost 6%
      2. Village of Eastman is up almost 2%
  2. District is stable with a solid balance sheet
    • Total Fund 10 Balance over 2 million; cash over a million

Building and Grounds

  • Improving facilities as we can
    • We have done a lot over the past few years
  • Understand that the staff B/G top priority need/want is A/C - we continue to look for ways to do that
    • New staff survey to be done later this fall
  • Softball / Little League Baseball at BV
  • Soccer / Multipurpose at BV
  • BAK; office, upstairs 4K technology, benches
  • High School; exterior envelope, upstairs bathrooms, gazebo and west grounds

10 of 53

Technology and Structural Changes

  • Wireless now fully across the High School
  • Wireless portions of Bluff View and BAK
  • Encourage use of this, especially at HS
  • BYOD, students allowed access
  • More freedoms for staff and students
  • Stress responsibility for everyone

(this is important for ALL STAFF)

11 of 53

Common Sense! If you would not want it in the paper, do not do it!

12 of 53

Direct Deposit updates

  • Required direct deposit routing for "paychecks".
  • Employees can route dollars from their checks to up to three additional vendors/accounts (total of four).
  • Under a current court ruling, the district is to allow deductions for union dues if desired by employees. Employees might want to choose to pay their union dues through this direct deposit process. Under the current state laws, union membership is an individual decision.
    • The District has no part or process in advising any employee on union membership.
    • If an employee is harassed in any way to join a union, or to not join a union, they should report that situation to an administrator.
    • Individual Employee shall determine the amount of salary reduction.
    • The Employee agrees that he/she is solely responsible for any and all taxes, interest, penalties, fines or forfeitures, which may be imposed.

(this is based on an interpretation and could change at any time)

13 of 53

This is a site that gives out most of the District information. It is owned by me, so occasionally I digress, but for the most part it is only school business and educational material.

The recommendation is to check and skim this site every couple of days to stay informed. We are purposely using less e-mail and paper.

14 of 53

So to wrap up the

all staff portion...

Have we made Progress?

Yes. We can be very happy with what you have done!

15 of 53

BUT...

We cannot stop improving.

We have a lot more work to do.

Increased Academic Achievement Levels and Higher ExpectationsRequire Change, Hard Work, Leadership, and taking some Risk

17 of 53

Break Down the Silos

We all need to work together toward academic achievement and school improvement:

  • Across the schools
  • Across jobs
  • Cover whenever and wherever is needed
  • Flexible; roles may change

No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main…

– John Donne

Everyone (all staff) are important in this whole school improvement model – we are in this together

Thank You

Are we going to

be competitive?

(past) Vision of the Common School Thomas Jefferson – 1797“By this means, twenty of the best geniuses will be raked from the rubbish annually and be instructed in Greek, Latin, geography, and the higher branches of arithmetic at the public expense, creating a new generation of leaders without regard to wealth, birth, or accidental condition.”

20 student standard: not acceptable today

21 of 53

Grandma’s, Grandpa’s, Mom’s, Dad’s, even yesterday’s school system is not good enough. We need to break out of that ‘sort and select’ mold of the past and move to all children being career and college ready.

22 of 53

High expectations and rigorous programming coupled with supplemental support structures are essential

It is not for us to

select and screen anymore

ALL kids must be prepared to high levels not just some elite group

This is a 4K through 12 initiative

We need to step it up across the board

23 of 53

Soon we will be evaluated on how well our students perform and ultimately this may somewhat determine how much we will get paid.

24 of 53

Starting this year, we will receive a “rating” from 0 to 100

25 of 53

Continually Increasing Expectations

  • College and Career Ready Standards
  • The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) is committed to ensuring every child graduates ready for further education and the workforce.
  • Common Core Standards

These are all very nice words, but what do they actually mean for us?

26 of 53

High School to College summit

  • College going culture needs to permeate everything
  • Mentality of some kids go to college, must change to ALL kids go to college
  • Teaching to average, must change to an expectation of all going to college
    • Increased Rigor
    • Supplemental academic supports

27 of 53

High School to College summit

  • Coaching toward college acceptance
  • Purpose of the American High School must be college enrollment and persistence (what does that mean?)
  • College defined as a post-secondary option that adds value in the marketplace

-Academic College -Military

-Technical College -Apprenticeships

RtI

Response to Instruction (all)

RtI

Response to Intervention (need)

32 of 53

RtI/PLC: fundamental purpose is learning

  • Supplemental (not supplant) Leveled Instruction:
    • Breakouts/Interventions; Instruction at student levels
      • Pre-teach and post-teach to keep students on track
      • Respond/intervene when a student experiences difficulty in their learning
      • If students have mastered the basal material, challenge them with enriching and extended higher level instruction
    • Modifications based on DATA – no life sentences
      • Team discusses and creates/modifies early and often interventions when students are struggling
      • Inform and improve the professional practice of individuals and the collaborative team

33 of 53

Stop evaluating/placing based on what is perceived that a child can accomplishhold all to high expectationsOnly evaluate/schedule children from the point of view of their need – what help or time is needed to be successful

RtI

34 of 53

NASSP reports that students are “being victimized by low adult expectations they are systematically being prevented from taking a more challenging course of study in high school… Ironically, the same adults who were entrusted with their care are those who forced these capable children off-target for college readiness.”

This is a 4K through 12 initiative

We need to step it up across the board

Advanced Placement (AP)

  • We have seen nice growth in students taking more challenging programming as elective classes
  • Thank you to the staff who are offering these high level offerings
  • But we are not done, we are continuing to push for more
  • Plan/commitment; continue to add AP
  • Increase access to more (all) students

The College Board strongly discourages the use of thresholds or requirements for admission to an AP course:

  • Grade point average
  • Grade in a required prerequisite course
  • Recommendation from a teacher
  • AP teacher’s discretion
  • Standardized test score
  • Course specific entrance exam or essay
  • Creating “Pre-AP courses” to establish a limited, exclusive track for access to AP

There have been many (over two decades or longer) who have been warning about the “soft bigotry of low expectations”.We must firmly guard against the thinking that somehow there is a reason, or there are reasons, why PdC kids cannot handle the rigor and expectations that other kids can.

Goal

42 of 53

Our kids at PdC deserve the same opportunities as in Marshfield (equivalent of 320 AP tests per year), New Berlin, or Elmbrook. Our kids are just as smart as the kids in those areas – they are worthy of it.With enhanced programming and high expectations, we can offer our students the same head-start into the world as others now get.

43 of 53

AP: Goals

  • Increase to 250 tests given/year
  • Add new AP classes each year
  • Integrate AP level work into underclass grades as appropriate grade 9 10 11 12
    • Human Geography 45,975 14,214 8,307 12,484
    • World History 11,394 146,547 17,305 7,148

AP: Four Year Goals

  • 400 tests given/year
  • Continue to add AP classes and access
  • Increase rigor and expectations across school

Goal: highest % in State of AP tests per student

How are we going to get there?

This is a 4K through 12 initiative

We need to step it up across the board

44 of 53

We can’t wait until the time is right, the time is now.

Martin Luther King Jr.

“Procrastination is the thief of time… We must choose [to act].”

We cannot wait for years to change as students do not have years to wait.

45 of 53

High-performing systems use the professional learning community (PLC) process to support powerful professional development through teacher collaboration - Rick DuFour

  • Redefine mission by changing focus to what students learn rather than what they are taught
  • Key to improved learning for students is continuous, data driven, job-embedded learning for educators
  • Teachers can no longer work in isolation. Teachers must be mutually accountable.

46 of 53

More change coming?

Increasing Competition

  • Other traditional Schools
  • Private Schools
  • Open enrollment (expanding every session)
  • On-line Schools
  • Homeschool as in past (small numbers)
  • New home schooling models are emerging that are using the web (potential of large numbers)

47 of 53

Blogs and Webpages (Google Docs)

Blog or use webpage for information to a group

  • Too much e-mail
  • Miss a few days is just fine
  • Archive
  • Easy to search

Not hard to do (I am doing it - model)

  • Cut and paste (fonts and bullets etc.)
  • Easier to embed video/pictures (drag)

48 of 53

Blogs/Webpages are NOT REQUIRED - YET!

Some schools are mandating for teachers

Try something, experiment with the tools, this will not happen in the next week. Do not be afraid to fail!

49 of 53

50 of 53

BYOD and other technology driven transformations will drive change We are going to expect experimentation; try somethingWe will have some things fail (that is ok)
