The Legion safeguards the Poppy trademark

  • This Poppy symbol of Remembrance is safeguarded by the Royal Canadian Legion, who work year-round to provide Veterans and their families with emergency support and all types of health needs.
  • The Legion states that the Poppy is not to be used for any kind of commercial gain and it is protected from inappropriate use, it is to only be used to show our respect for the fallen Veterans.
  • The Legion requires permission for the use of the trademark Poppy, or the Poppy image as it stands for Remembrance.

  • The trademark does not apply to the use of the real Poppy flower, unless it is used to represent another organization.
  • A single item that has a Poppy image that is not the Legion trademark Poppy, is acceptable within the legal allowances as it is relates to trademark law. In both countries (and possibly elsewhere) the poppy is trademarked, by the Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) and the Royal British Legion (RBL).
  • The trademark extends to any colour of the poppy when used as a symbol of remembrance.
