Background

OPEN STUDIO MODEL

The Model:

  • M.Arch students are required to take two rigorous design studios in their final year: Propositions (6 credits) and Thesis (6 credits)

  • The Open Studio Model introduces the option to complete the Propositions studio as an international travel studio in the Spring of students’ penultimate year

  • Participants retroactively enroll in the preceding Winter term; no additional tuition costs are incurred for Spring

  • Participants commit to full-time enrollment during the Fall and Winter terms of their final year by signing a formal agreement

Student Costs

SPRING PROPOSITIONS

  • A $500 non-refundable deposit is required to hold your position in a course. It will be applied toward your future travel costs.

  • Students are responsible for all travel costs:
    • Airfare, lodging, transportation, visa and vaccinations, meals, admission fees

  • Depending on course design, students may be responsible for identifying and securing their own arrangements, such as airfare, accommodations, and transportation

  • Taubman College Travel Scholarships
    • $1500 per student
    • Disbursement depends on course design
    • Only applied toward travel costs: airfare, transportation, lodging, admission fees
    • International Students: Travel funding is taxable at 14%. This rate could be further reduced under an income tax treaty agreement between the United States and your home country. For questions regarding potential tax implications, contact the U-M Payroll Office.

Travel Visas

SPRING PROPOSITIONS

  • Taubman College cannot assist with the visa application process.

  • Requirements are highly variable based on individual citizenship status and destination

  • We encourage you to research visa requirements prior to balloting and to apply for your visa as far in advance as possible

  • CIBT Visas can provide an estimate of visa requirements

  • In most instances, a short-term tourist visa is the most appropriate selection.

  • Visa and passport costs are the responsibility of the student

SPRING PROPOSITIONS

  • Travel Health Insurance:
    • Taubman College purchases Travel Health Insurance on your behalf for dates of travel + departure/return
    • If you are extending your stay, we encourage you to extend your coverage with individual travel health insurance as it is a very affordable resource

  • Travel Registration:
    • Taubman College will register your travel with U-M per university requirements
    • You will receive an email from M-Compass prompting you to complete required information – students who do not complete this requirement are not eligible to participate
