“Help me,” said the shimmering image. The old man had died a few summers ago. No one told us how. Mom wouldn’t let me out to play without some of the bigger kids present. The woods were off limits.

When I stepped into the one room shack at the edge of the woods Halloween night, I had an idea of who lived there. The plastic pumpkin in my right hand, pop-ready with candy, made the cheap handle cut into my fingers. In my other hand, I grasped the blessed silver cross my Mom had given me.

The old man pointed to the floorboards. The box hidden there contained a letter. I looked up. I smiled. For a moment, he smiled back.

“Goodbye, Dad.” A tear slipped onto my ghost sheet.

I didn’t believe in ghosts until...I took a picture of an old barn to paint and when I had the photo developed there was a child with a dog standing in front of the barn.The picture scared me so much, I put it in a safety deposit box. The bank burned down.
