Talking to the Mentees: Tips & Guidelines

*Reflect on your own experience in middle school.

What major changes did you go through?

How did you identify yourself?

* Relate to your mentees without faking a shared experience.

What are some ways you can relate to your mentee without using the “me too” approach?

*Always validate their opinions and experiences!

*Pay attention to them! Do not allow yourself to be distracted by outside conversation or worse- a cell phone!

*Avoid judgment. Do not criticize or tell the mentee what to do. Instead, ask questions and encourage your mentee to explore her own feelings, thoughts, and actions.

*If a mentee doesn’t volunteer information of herself, start by talking about yourself! Then you can ask her what she thinks of that anecdote or that opinion of yours.

*Be genuine. Mentees are very receptive, and they also look up to us as role models- they will mimic your behaviors!

How We Plan a Session...

  1. You sign up for a session in accordance to your own personal interest and availability during the week that session will take place (you’ll fill out your preferences at the end)
  2. A leading director will generally contact you and other leading mentors so y’all can assign optimal meeting times for everyone who is planning. (Usually through “When is Good”, Doodle, etc.)
  3. Normally, y’all will meet 2-3 times throughout the week prior to your session.
    1. You will come up with activities that will best engage mentors and mentees for your particular topic. (ex. Crafts, skits, visual media, affirmations…)
    2. These activities will be listed in a session outline that should be ready no later than the Monday that precedes your session.
  4. The day of your session… Have fun! Don’t stress. It’s a learning experience for yourself and everyone there.
