FOCUS?
WHAT IS
Focus is the distance at which your image is sharpest
1. (noun) The position at which rays of light from a lens converge to form a clear and sharply defined image on a focal plane.
2. (verb) The action of adjusting the distance between the lens and subject to make light rays converge to form a clear and sharply defined image of the subject.

DEPTH OF FIELD?
WHAT IS
Depth of Field (D.O.F.) is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear acceptably sharp in an image.

DEPTH OF FIELD IS AFFECTED BY:
APERTURE
CONTROLLING DEPTH OF FIELD USING
Aperture size
APERTURE
CONTROLLING DEPTH OF FIELD USING
LOW NUMBER (EG. F/2) = LARGE HOLE = SHALLOW D.O.F.
HIGH NUMBER (EG. F/64) = SMALL HOLE = DEEP D.O.F.
DOF extends further behind than in front (⅓ and ⅔ respectively)

APERTURE & SHUTTER SPEED
SITUATION: The scene isn’t very bright and you want to freeze movement…
—
FASTER shutter speed = less light
Therefore you may need to compensate by using a LARGER aperture
If you use a LARGER aperture you get SHALLOWER depth of field
—-
If you want DEEPER depth of field you may need to use a SMALLER aperture.
Therefore you may need to use a SLOWER shutter speed to get enough light.
This may cause MOTION BLUR.

Shooting Modes
MANUAL MODE
You set aperture, shutter, and ISO using your light meter as guide
Total control of settings, takes more time and practice, easier to make mistakes
FULL AUTO
Automatically sets aperture and shutter,
often also sets flash and ISO
Little to no control of exposure and effects, less chance of egregious exposure mistakes
FLASH OFF // AUTO FLASH OFF MODE
Same as full automatic, but flash is disabled
PROGRAM MODE
“Advanced” Auto
Ability to adjust exposure slightly,
won’t change ISO or flash settings
EXPOSURE COMPENSATION
Press this button
Looks the same as your light meter—functions slightly differently
Use scroll wheel for
exposure adjustment
to change
A way to adjust your exposure up or down while in semi-automatic modes
APERTURE PRIORITY
You choose aperture setting, camera automatically sets shutter
Can use exposure compensation
SHUTTER PRIORITY
You choose shutter speed, camera automatically sets aperture
Can use exposure compensation
PORTRAIT MODE
Camera automatically selects wide aperture
May also adjust color or focus
(May have elegant hat)
LANDSCAPE MODE
Camera automatically selects small aperture
May turn flash off, may choose long focus
MACRO MODE
Camera automatically selects closest focus
May open aperture up or close it down, check your camera’s manual
SPORTS MODE
Camera automatically selects fast shutter speed
Often will disable flash
NIGHT MODE // NIGHT PORTRAIT
Camera automatically selects slow shutter
May turn flash on
