It looked like chaos — and mostly, it worked.
Outsiders saw a lawless slum. Many residents remembered a functioning, close community: shops, schools, workshops, and neighbors who looked out for each other, all inside the maze.

Demolished in the 1990s
The authorities finally cleared and demolished the Walled City in 1993–94. Today a quiet park stands where the densest human settlement in history once buzzed. Its legend only grew after it was gone.
