Math

Math Expressions is the mathematical program used by Jamestown and the entire Hudsonville Public School District.

Math Expressions emphasizes in-depth mathematics through real world problem situations, modeling, conceptual language, and MATH TALK to help students build mathematical ideas that make sense to them.

19 of 28

Math

Through daily MATH TALK, students explain their methods and, in turn, become more fluent with them.

Math Talk in Action: Ask children to tell a partner story about each of the partners of 10.

Joe: There are 9 boy cousins and 1 girl cousin in my family.

Susan: I have 8 gold fish and 2 blue fish.

Gabby: I picked 7 red roses and 3 pink roses.

The skills and concepts taught connect and build across the grade levels to provide a progression of learning.

Math

Parent Letters come home to help explain the math concepts and how to help your child.

Find a place to keep these at home so you can easily refer to them when you need them.

Math

Math manipulatives may also come home with your child’s homework.

These are meant to be used and kept at home to support math talk and learning of concepts/strategies.

Math

Homework Schedule -

Math homework comes home every Tuesday and Thursday night and is due back the following day.

23 of 28

Math Homework

Math homework covers concepts we have already spent considerable amount of time on in the classroom.

Math homework should be something your child can do independently. It may even seem easy, but that is the point. We want it to be a chance to practice skills the students already know how to do as well as give you an insight to what is being worked on in the classroom.

Math - Responsibility

Good Homework Habits:

-Responsibility: We want your child to be responsible for their own homework this year. Encourage them to do their homework right when they get home, discuss it with you and have you check it, then put it in their backpack right away so they don’t forget it.

Having a consistent homework time will leave less opportunity for your child to forget to do it.

On busy scheduled days, have your child work on it in the car or at breakfast.

Math - Parent Resources

How to Help:

Check your child’s work and talk about it.

Instead of telling them they got one wrong, ask them to explain their thinking behind the answer and use it as a teachable time.

Remind them to check their work to help catch silly mistakes.

Math - Parent Resources

Your child’s math glossary will be coming home in their folder. This is another great resource for you as you help your child in math.
