Definition

A foot note is a reference placed at the bottom of a page or footer.

Footnotes are short numbered notes that are placed at the bottom of the page in an essay or article.

• Purpose

Footnotes allow an author to guide his or her reader to additional information or further study, without disrupting the flow of the sentence.

Footnotes provide additional information or cite the source of a passage in the page’s text.

A footnote is marked within the text by a superscript icon, usually an asterisk(*)ie number (1), which corresponds to the matching footnote at the bottom of the page.

Types of footnotes

• Content footnotes
• These footnotes, also known as bibliographical citations, provide supplementary information about the ideas and topics that you explore in the main body of writing.
• Copyright permission footnotes: these footnotes indicate quotations or text you are using with permission form a publisher or original source. This type of of footnote is necessary if you are reproducing lengthy and copyrighted text and quotes.
