Design Thinking: Clocks

Project Focus: After realizing their classroom needed a clock after undergoing construction, 2-3 multi-age students had the idea of designing and creating their own. In order to complete this project, students experienced the design thinking process in the Innovation Lab for design and fabrication. In addition to creating a classroom clock, each student additionally designed and fabricated their own clock.

Skills Growth: Students empathized by interviewing, defined the project, ideated, prototyped and tested their clocks. Students were actively engaged in independently utilizing various tools and materials throughout the design thinking process. Each student had agency to showcase their design skills, craftsmanship, and creativity.

Along with the sessions in the Innovation Lab, students practiced telling time on an analog clock for math.

Essential Questions or Learning Goals:

  • What does it mean to tell time?
  • How does an analog clock operate?
  • Students will know how to tell time to the minute and to the hour independently on an analog clock.

3D Plant Models

Project Focus: For a Life Sciences unit investigating living and non-living organisms & characteristics, 3rd & 5th grade students first observed and then completed a scientific sketch of a plant of choice. Students then designed and fabricated a 3D model of their plant in the Innovation Lab using a variety of tools and materials.

Skills Growth: Students experienced the design process of sketching, ideating, prototyping and fabricating. Students learned how to utilize various techniques, tools & materials, such as the Zip Snip, canary cutter, hot glue, etc. Ultimately, 3rd-5th grade students experienced problem solving, collaboration, and the meaning of craftsmanship.

Essential Questions or Learning Goals:

Students Will Learn:

  • Living & Non-Living factors of an environment, and their interactions

Students Will Be Able to:

  • Identify abiotic & biotic factors
  • Diagram, Model, and Label Plants
  • Explain How Energy Travels within an Ecosystem

Classroom Theme Banner: Bloom

Project Focus: The first and second grade multi-age class wanted to complete a community project to showcase their classroom theme for the year, “Bloom.” After brainstorming various ways to represent their theme, students decided on designing and fabricating a banner featuring the word “Bloom” to be displayed in their classroom as inspiration and reflection.

Artist Statement:

“Making the banner was fun because I learned how the laser cutter works and I got to create a stamp with patterns.” - Student in 1-2SE

Maker Bio: The first and second grade multi-age class is comprised of 16 students.

Skills Growth: Students expanded on their study of shapes and patterns from Math and Art classes to investigate patterns observed around the Lower School, create their own custom pattern, then use their drawing to fabricate a rubber stamp on the laser cutter. After creating custom patterned fabric using their stamps, students helped sew the fabric into a bunting for a banner. They then used their handwriting to design the bubble letters to spell the word “Bloom,” which was cut out of heat-transfer vinyl on the vinyl cutter.

Inspiration: The class was inspired by their theme for the year, Bloom. After brainstorming what it means to bloom, what things in our world bloom, etc., students wanted a way in which to display their theme to be referenced for the remainder of the school year.

Essential Questions or Learning Goals:

  • How can we send welcoming signals out into the greater Lower School community?
  • How can we create something that represents all of us?
  • How do we recognize, draw, and replicate different shapes and patterns?
  • Learn about tools in the innovation lab beyond hand construction.

Architecture Creations: 3D Designing, Modeling, AR & VR

Project Focus: Students in second and third grade multi-age researched, 3D designed in Tinkercad and fabricated custom architectural structures as a culminating project after a Pokemon deep dive in their classroom.

After completing their fabrication, students investigated and learned about a 3D modeling, AR & VR program called CoSpaces. Students uploaded their Tinkercad designs into CoSpaces, and created a virtual reality and augmented reality scene.

In our process, students use three key techniques to address these issues: 1. a milestone schedule, 2. regular project review meetings and memos and 3. design memos which document each design task as the project progresses.

Mr. Popper’s Penguins - STEM exploration

3rd Grade end of the year novel study

For this project, students used the vocabulary study and novel to assist them in making a toboggan that would slide the farthest. They were grouped in groups of 2. They had to work together to create, edit and race their car against their peers.
