Description of the 9-GA4 Session Work Stage

  • When a user opens a website or application, GA4 triggers the "session_start" event, marking the beginning of a new session.
  • As long as the user does not leave the website and continues to interact with it (such as scrolling or clicking), GA4 will not automatically end the session, and it will not terminate due to 30 minutes of inactivity.
  • 3. GA4 uses "Session ID" to track all events within the same session.

27 of 30

When will GA4 end a session?

  1. User completely closes the browser / App
  2. After a long period of inactivity on the website, when you return, GA4 will recalculate a new session.
  3. The new day begins (based on time zone).

28 of 30

Example: User A

  • Example 1
    • At 10:00 AM, entered the e-commerce website and began browsing products (session_start event triggered).
    • 10:10 Click "Add to Cart".
    • 10:15 Entered the checkout page and closed the website after staying for 5 minutes.
  • Conclusion:
    • This visit is one work session, lasting 15 minutes.

29 of 30

Example: User B

  • Example 2
    • 14:00 Entered the website, session started (session_start).
    • 14:15 Proceed with "shopping cart checkout".
    • 14:20 Left the website, but did not close the browser.
    • 14:50 Return to the website to continue browsing products.
  • Conclusion:
    • GA4 does not count a new session because the user has not closed the browser; it is still considered the same session.
