Richard Nixon was elected President in 1969 on promises to end US involvement in the Vietnam War. Widespread American backlash to the war in addition to the stalemate of the brutal fighting led to Nixon’s order to withdraw US troops in starting in 1970.

Then, American foreign policy shifts towards ending the Cold War. It took several US presidents in addition to new Soviet leadership to eventually end the conflict.
