  • There are several foundational elements and concepts of design that make the design process easier. They are posted in my classroom, but since you cannot see them right now, I will share a picture of them. May 25-29: Installing

June 1-5: Maintenance

There will be a Zoom Meeting on Friday, April 17 from 11:30am 12pm. You will get an email with the link.

AGENDA FOR TODAY

  • Hey everyone, check out the essential topics we are going to cover during the remaining weeks. I have thoroughly enjoyed doing some spring maintenance on landscaping in our community along with preparing my parents yard for warmer weather.
  • I am going to work hard to post a skeletal frame work on this learning log through the end of the semester, with lessons, tutorials and things you can do at home for these essential tasks.
  • I am also going to give you video recordings, of myself, and fun videos to watch to aid you in your essential learning target completion. I am in the process of doing those videos right now.
  • If you are just joining me, for class again, please take a look at the enrichment activities that we have completed since moving to this online format. The Enrichment Learning period started on Monday, March 23. I am tracking which students have participated in various activities. Especially look at the landscape design lessons from the last few days.

Students will be able to begin the landscape design process.

Please watch these videos before we start designing next week.

April 20-24, 2020

UNIT TOPIC: Landscape Design

ESSENTIAL QUESTION(S): How do I draw that?

FOCUS: We will focus on how to create landscape designs.

ENDURING UNDERSTANDING: Before starting any project, a clear and concise plan is needed, especially with landscaping. Placement of existing features like homes, sheds, decks, pools, hardscapes, and plant materials is key when adding new features to a property.

  • Students will be able to identify ornamental plants used in the landscape.

AGENDA FOR TODAY

  • Today you are going to begin studying ornamental plants used in landscape, hardy to our climate. This PPT features all of the plants found on the OFHS campus. Many of these plants are found in the courtyard, along with other landscaping areas near the school and athletic fields.
  • For the purposes of this semester, you will have to just ID them, not study the characteristics. That is a university/tech college level learning target. SIDE NOTE: All of these plants are on the FFA’s nursery & landscaping or forestry ID practicums.
  • I just ask you to look through the slideshow today. Begin looking at characteristics that are unique to them. Characteristics to look at include: leave shape and color, plant geometric form, flowers, fruits/seeds, bark, etc.
  • I will post games on Thursday to aid in your studies. We will play a game with them on Friday, May 1 from 10-11am if you can join via Zoom.

  • Students will be able to explain how a hardscape is properly installed.

AGENDA FOR TODAY

  • Hardscapes are any landscaping feature that is not plant material. In today’s landscape installation tutorial, we will assess how to properly install a retaining wall. There is a lot of force behind walls, and you can drive around town and the countryside, witnessing walls that are failing. If you DIY or have a landscape company install a wall, this is how it should be done. The videos are courtesy of UNILOCK, a masonry company that produces landscape products.
