Educator instructions:

Reveal the answer and discuss as a class: Do you see any clues that indicate which photo is real and which is generated by artificial intelligence? (Sometimes, as in this example, there might not be any obvious signs.)
Explain that the rise of more convincing fake visuals created with AI technology means finding the source and context of an image is often more important than hunting for visual clues of authenticity. Any viral image that can’t be verified through a reliable source – using a reverse image search, for example – should be approached with skepticism.

Extension:

Show this NLP video (also on Instagram) on how quickly generative AI technology has advanced in generating photorealistic images and video. Educator instructions:

Have students watch the video and answer these questions in a notebook.
Hold a class discussion to see how many clues students could identify. (Answers: 1. The polar bear has five legs at one point in the video; 2. Its paw transforms into a furry hand; 3. The polar bear goes through a man’s arm; 4. The creator labeled the video as AI-generated.) Then discuss what steps students could take to fact-check other videos that they suspect were created using AI tools. Their answers might include checking for AI disclaimers in a content creator’s account bio, doing a quick internet search and practicing critical observation skills.

Reveal the answers: B. and D. Say: This is not an authentic photograph of a Temu warehouse fire. This is an AI-generated image. AI-generated content is increasingly difficult to spot, but these images sometimes contain clues about their origins. In this case, a watermark for Grok, an AI chatbot that can also generate images, can be seen in the bottom-right corner, and there is a symbol for Grok in the upper right-hand corner. This post also uses humor and is poking fun of Temu’s low prices by noting that inventory lost in the fire only totaled $56.19. This use of humor suggests it has a purpose other than to inform and signals that it’s worth questioning the claim made in this post.
