  • Assesses four domains: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing

  • Initial ELPAC purpose: Identification of students as English Learners (ELs)
  • Summative ELPAC purpose: To measure a student’s progress in learning English and to identify the student’s English language proficiency
  • Summative ELPAC is Required for ALL EL Students

Why is it Important?

Why is the ELPAC Important?

  • It identifies students who might need additional support in learning English

  • The scores allow schools to provide appropriate instruction and ensure that students receive the necessary scaffolds to succeed in their studies when English is not their primary language

  • Measures a student’s progress in English Language Development , and helps determine if a student is ready to be reclassified as proficient in English.

English Proficiency and Academic Achievement

  • Research indicates that becoming proficient in a second language generally takes 5-7 years
  • Students with strong native language skills can transfer those skills to the new language
  • Consistent exposure to the new language in various settings helps to accelerate learning.
