LESSON 3: Responses to Climate Change - Continued

ACTIVITY 1 - LAUNCH

The students will work in small groups to analyze four examples of responses to climate change at different geographic scales. Students will rotate through four stations and read each profile. At each station, students will identify who is taking action, the climate-related problem being addressed, the geographic scale of the response, and evidence that supports their scale selection. It is recommended to create 2 or 3 sets of stations to limit the number of students in one location at a time.

TEACHER ACTIONS

  1. Set up classroom
  2. 2-3 sets of station
  3. 4 stations per set
  4. ~4 copies of a profile card at each station
  5. Determine student groupings
  6. Hand out student worksheet
  7. Direct students to starting station
  8. Provide academic and behavior expectations
  9. Monitor timing and direct movement (~7-8 minutes per station is recommended)
  10. Debrief the evidence chart with the whole class at the conclusion of the activity

STUDENT ACTIONS

  1. Move to sit with group at assigned station
  2. Work with group to read each
  3. Community Profile Card and fill out the pages 1-2
  4. Participate in the whole class debrief

ACTIVITY 2 - PRACTICE

Then, students will complete the Scales of Analysis Graphic Organizer to support their analysis of responses to climate change. If desired, choose a scale for the class and model the first question (Evidence) collectively and then release students to complete the rest on their own or with a partner.

TEACHER ACTIONS

  • Direct students to page 3
  • Consider modeling for students a portion of the graphic organizer before releasing
  • Debrief the Scales of Analysis Graphic Organizer and have students revise their worksheet

STUDENT ACTIONS

  • Complete Scales of Analysis Graphic Organizer
  • Participate in the class debrief and make adjustments, as needed

LESSON 3: Responses to Climate Change - Continued

ACTIVITY 3 -

EXHIBIT

Students will plan out their CER paragraph for the Inquiry Journal using the CER Planning Template in their student worksheet.

TEACHER ACTIONS

  • Direct students to page 4
  • Display the Unit 8 Topic 1 Compelling Question
  • Instruct students to complete their outline

STUDENT ACTIONS

  1. Draft an outline for Topic 1 CER paragraph using the CER Planning Template on page 4 of the student worksheet

CONCLUSION

Students will reflect on their learning from the prior topic using the Unit 8 Inquiry Journal. Students will use page 2 to write a CER paragraph for the Compelling Question for Topic 1.

TEACHER ACTIONS

  • Provide students’ instructions for the Compelling Question for Topic 1
  • Monitor student progress and provide feedback as needed

STUDENT ACTIONS

  • Write a CER paragraph for Topic 1 Compelling Question
