PRONUNCIATION TIME

The past simple ending -ed has three possible pronunciations.

  • /d/
  • /t/
  • /ɪd/

How can we know how to pronounce it in each verb, then?

Check the last sound of the present form of the verb.

  • If it is voiced, meaning that there is vibration in your throat when you produce it, the pronunciation is /d/.
  • If it is voiceless, meaning that there is no vibration in your throat when you produce it, the pronunciation is /t/.
  • If the last sound is /d/ or /t/, the pronunciation of -ed is /ɪd/.
